Cryptophytes: An emerging algal group in the rapidly changing Antarctic Peninsula marine environments

Carlos Rafael Borges Mendes et al.

Summary: Based on a 11-year in-situ dataset, researchers found that cryptophytes are gradually replacing diatoms as the basis of the food web in the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Their study demonstrates a strong coupling between cryptophyte biomass accumulation, summer upper ocean stability, and mixed layer depth. These findings shed light on the importance of niche separation between diatoms and cryptophytes in understanding the WAP marine ecosystem.

Antarctica Slope Front bifurcation eddy: A stationary feature influencing CO2 dynamics in the northern Antarctic Peninsula

Brendon Yuri Damini et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics of sea-air CO2 dynamics through the investigation of an anticyclonic stationary eddy called the Antarctica Slope Front bifurcation (ASFb) eddy, located south of Clarence Island in the eastern basin of Bransfield Strait. The results revealed that the ASFb eddy acts as a CO2 outgassing structure with a core consisting of carbon-rich waters. These findings provide important insights into the behavior of mesoscale features influencing sea-air CO2 exchanges in polar environments.

Long-term changes on the Bransfield Strait deep water masses: Variability, drivers and connections with the northwestern Weddell Sea

Brendon Yuri Damini et al.

Summary: The Bransfield Strait receives significant input from dense shelf water formed in the Weddell Sea, leading to different trends in deep water properties in its central and eastern basins. This variability is likely due to different mixing proportions and sources of the dense waters precursors. The interannual variability of thermohaline properties in the Bransfield Strait is influenced by climate modes such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation and the Southern Annular Mode, impacting the contribution of high salinity shelf water. Evidence suggests an increase in high salinity shelf water due to sea ice formation in the Weddell Sea, highlighting the importance of understanding how changes in source water masses affect global overturning circulation.

Variability and Dynamics of Along-Shore Exchange on the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) Continental Shelf

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The continental shelf of the West Antarctic Peninsula is characterized by strong alongshore hydrographic gradients influenced by warm Bellingshausen Sea to the south and cold Weddell Sea water to the north. The seasonal and interannual variability in along-shore exchange processes control the spatial structure and variability of glacier retreat and other physical and biochemical factors along the shelf. The wind conditions and hemispheric-scale climate processes play a key role in modulating the amount of cold water flowing into the central West Antarctic Peninsula from Bransfield Strait, highlighting the significance of along-shore exchange in regulating hydrographic properties in the region.

Change and variability in Antarctic coastal exposure, 1979-2020

P. A. Reid et al.

Summary: Loss of protective sea-ice buffer in Antarctica has led to increased exposure of the coastal environment to open ocean and waves, which has significant effects on ice-shelf stability, coastal erosion, ice-ocean-atmosphere interactions, and shallow benthic ecosystems. Researchers have introduced a climate and environmental metric called Coastal Exposure Length, which measures the daily changes and variability in the length and occurrence of unprotected coastline in Antarctica. The study found that around 50% of Antarctica's 17,850-km coastline had no sea ice offshore each summer, with variations in exposure levels across regions and seasons. From 1979 to 2020, the annual maximum length of coastal exposure decreased by approximately 30 km per year.

The marine carbonate system along the northern Antarctic Peninsula: current knowledge and future perspectives

Iole B. M. Orselli et al.

Summary: The northern Antarctic Peninsula has become a hotspot for climate change investigation, but there are knowledge gaps regarding the carbonate system in the region. This study focuses on identifying current knowledge about sea-air CO2 fluxes, anthropogenic carbon, and ocean acidification, as well as understanding the key physical processes controlling the carbonate system.

Intense atmospheric rivers can weaken ice shelf stability at the Antarctic Peninsula

Jonathan D. Wille et al.

Summary: This study uses an atmospheric river detection algorithm, regional climate model, and satellite observations to investigate the processes leading to the dramatic collapse of ice shelves in the Antarctic Peninsula. The research finds that intense atmospheric rivers have a 40% probability of inducing extremes in temperature, surface melt, sea-ice disintegration, or large swells that destabilize the ice shelves. This phenomenon was observed during the collapses of the Larsen A and B ice shelves. The study also reveals that 60% of calving events from 2000-2020 were triggered by atmospheric rivers, highlighting their significant role in ice shelf stability.

Raul Rodrigo Costa et al.

Summary: Diatoms are important in the Southern Ocean ecosystems and their responses under climate change scenario need to be understood in detail. A Review and Meta-Analysis of Potential Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Marine Calcifiers From the Southern Ocean

Blanca Figuerola et al.

Summary: Understanding the vulnerability of marine calcifiers to ocean acidification is crucial, especially in the Southern Ocean. The response variation to OA is largely dependent on species' mineralogical composition, with aragonitic and high-Mg calcite species being more susceptible. Ocean warming could exacerbate the effects of OA on these species, while low-Mg calcite species may be more resilient.

A novel hydrographic gridded data set for the northern Antarctic Peninsula

Tiago S. Dotto et al.

Summary: The northern Antarctic Peninsula (NAP) is a dynamic transitional zone affected by intense climate change, with water masses mainly originating from the Bellingshausen and Weddell seas. Limited understanding of the region's water masses and dynamic processes is attributed to sparse data coverage. The novel NAPv1.0 data set presented in this work provides a valuable tool for studying climatological changes in the NAP region.
