Boron proxies record paleosalinity variation in the North American Midcontinent Sea in response to Carboniferous glacio-eustasy

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: By analyzing shale formations from two different locations, we were able to determine the variation in salinity during the Late Pennsylvanian North American Midcontinent Sea. Our findings showed that salinity was lower during lower sea-level periods and higher during high sea-level periods, which is consistent with conventional interpretations of Midcontinent cyclothems. Additionally, the Illinois Basin had lower salinity conditions compared to the Midcontinent shelf, likely due to greater freshwater influence from heavy river runoff.

Oceanic anoxia and extinction in the latest Ordovician

Mu Liu et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between the Late Ordovician mass extinction and global marine anoxia through uranium isotope analysis. The research reveals that two episodes of widespread marine anoxia occurred during the Late Katian and the mid-late Hirnantian, with varying effects on biotic turnover.

Redox changes in the outer Yangtze Sea (South China) through the Hirnantian Glaciation and their implications for the end-Ordovician biocrisis

Na Li et al.

Summary: During the Late Ordovician mass extinction, two pulses of faunal mortality occurred as a result of expanded marine euxinia, affecting both inner and outer Yangtze Sea. The less-studied outer Yangtze Sea sections show changes in marine redox conditions, chemical weathering rates, and primary productivity. The contraction and expansion of oceanic euxinia in response to continental weathering intensity and sulfate availability played a significant role in shaping marine redox variations and influencing the biotic crisis during this time period.

Multiple glacio-eustatic cycles and associated environmental changes through the Hirnantian (Late Ordovician) in South China

Chao Li et al.

Summary: Through high-resolution geochemical analyses and sedimentological study of drill cores from South China, this research revealed three glacio-eustatic cycles within the Hirnantian glaciation, offering new insights into the triggers and consequences of this event. The sea level changes observed can be correlated with records in different regions and may have led to perturbations in marine nutrient cycling. The study also calls for a re-evaluation of the mechanisms behind the biotic crisis that occurred during this glaciation.

Hydrological controls on marine chemistry in the Cryogenian Nanhua Basin (South China)

Meng Cheng et al.

Summary: The seawater chemistry of the Cryogenian Nanhua Basin was significantly influenced by the fluxes of freshwater and seawater, with black shale deposition associated with low salinity and Mn-carbonate deposition linked to higher salinity. During anoxic depositional intervals, enhanced decay of organic matter led to C-12-enriched dissolved inorganic carbon precipitating in Mn-carbonates.

Responses of oceanic chemistry to climatic perturbations during the Ordovician-Silurian transition: Implications for geochemical proxies and organic accumulations

Summary: This study investigates the geochemical composition of sediments in the Ordovician-Silurian transition on the Yangtze Platform, highlighting the impact of diagenesis on Fe speciation and its implications for organic accumulation. The findings suggest that productivity, upwelling, and climatic conditions play a significant role in organic accumulation in different periods, emphasizing the importance of a multi-proxy approach in paleoenvironmental studies.
