High-resolution marine osmium and carbon isotopic record across the Aptian-Albian boundary in the southern South Atlantic: Evidence for enhanced continental weathering and ocean acidification

Hironao Matsumoto et al.

Summary: The Early Cretaceous Aptian-Albian boundary interval was a period of severe environmental perturbations, with evidence of global warming, Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1b, and a major turnover of planktonic foraminifera. Previous studies have mainly focused on sedimentary sequences at low latitudes, and the global extent of these environmental changes in high latitudes remains uncertain. In this study, the authors used a sedimentary sequence from DSDP Site 511 on the Falkland Plateau to reconstruct the isotopic stratigraphy and infer the paleo-marine redox conditions at southern high latitudes. They found evidence of a radiogenic osmium isotopic shift and oxygen depletion in the southern Atlantic Ocean during the AAB interval.

Widespread wildfires linked to early Albian Ocean Anoxic Event 1b: Evidence from the Fuxin lacustrine basin, NE China

Xiaotao Xu et al.

Summary: Wildfires are important disturbances in the Earth's system and understanding their interactions with environmental, atmospheric and vegetation changes is crucial. In the early Cretaceous, there were frequent and widespread wildfires, which had significant impacts on the environment and climate during that time. These wildfires influenced vegetation distribution and evolution, and also contributed to erosion and nutrient enrichment in lakes and oceans.

Orbitally paced global oceanic deoxygenation decoupled from volcanic CO2 emission during the middle Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event 1b (Aptian-Albian transition)

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: The ongoing oceanic oxygen loss will have a profound impact on the distribution and density of life on Earth. However, drivers of the initiation and termination of global oceanic deoxygenation are poorly understood. New research reveals that in the mid-Cretaceous, there were three rapid global deoxygenation events that occurred after massive volcanism and were influenced by increased continental weathering under a warmer climate. The interactions of long-term climate change and short-term orbital modulation played a role in the termination of each deoxygenation interval.

New evidences of subaerial volcanism as a trigger for the Kilian event (Aptian-Albian transition) and major climatic changes from offshore Morocco (DSDP Site 545)

Elodie Bracquart et al.

Summary: This study investigates the triggering mechanisms of the Kilian event and its impact on regional climates through geochemical and mineralogical analysis of sediment cores from the DSDP Site 545 offshore Morocco. The results confirm the role of Kerguelen volcanic activity as the trigger of the Kilian event and demonstrate the significant changes in regional climates before and after the event due to alterations in the carbon cycle.

Aptian-Albian clumped isotopes from northwest China: cool temperatures, variable atmospheric pCO2 and regional shifts in the hydrologic cycle

Dustin T. Harper et al.

Summary: The Early Cretaceous period was characterized by warm background temperatures and carbon cycle perturbations marked by ocean anoxic events and shifts in the hydrologic cycle. Higher-resolution records of terrestrial and marine isotopes reveal climate shifts during the Aptian-Albian, with a warm period associated with OAE 1a followed by a cold snap near the Aptian-Albian boundary. Understanding the continental system is crucial in determining the triggers and feedback to these events.
