Simulated effects of plastic film-mulched soil on surface energy fluxes based on optimized TSEB model in a drip-irrigated cotton field

Friday Uchenna Ochege et al.

Summary: The value-added by plastic film mulches in agricultural productivity is significant, but its impact on water cycling and energy fluxes are often neglected. This study optimized a model to simulate the effects of plastic film mulches on surface energy fluxes, showing improved accuracy compared to the original model. The study also revealed the contribution of evaporation and transpiration in cotton water use at different growth stages.

A global 0.05° dataset for gross primary production of sunlit and shaded vegetation canopies from 1992 to 2020

Wenjun Bi et al.

Summary: Distinguishing the gross primary production of sunlit and shaded leaves is crucial for understanding the mechanisms regulating long-term changes in gross primary production. In this study, a global dataset for gross primary production, GPP(sun), and GPP(shade) over 1992-2020 was generated using an updated model driven by leaf area index, meteorology, and land cover data. The results show increasing trends over time, with crops and evergreen broadleaf forests contributing the most to the total gross primary production.

Uncertainty analysis of multiple terrestrial gross primary productivity products

Yahai Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the uncertainty of 45 GPP products in different categories was assessed, and an attribution analysis was performed. The results show that the uncertainty of GPP products is mainly influenced by the spatial distribution pattern, with lower uncertainty in deciduous broadleaf forests and deciduous needleleaf forests, and higher uncertainty in woody savannas and savannas. Soil moisture and precipitation are the two factors that contribute most to GPP uncertainty.

Quantifying the contribution of climate change and human activities to biophysical parameters in an arid region

Wenqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study quantified the impact of human activities and climate change on biophysical parameters in the Northern Tianshan Mountains, revealing a strong spatial heterogeneity in the spatial variation of these parameters. While climate change contributed more to the biophysical parameters overall, human activities had a significant impact on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index.

Uncertainty analysis of eleven multisource soil moisture products in the third pole environment based on the three-corned hat method

Jin Liu et al.

Summary: This research investigates the spatial patterns and potential drivers of uncertainty in different SM products over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, finding that most SM products perform well across the region, but some are affected by specific factors such as radio-frequency interference and noise levels. The study also reveals that underlying surface characteristics and near-ground meteorology play significant roles in influencing the uncertainties of different SM products.

Tracking the seasonal and inter-annual variations of global gross primary production during last four decades using satellite near-infrared reflectance data

Songhan Wang et al.

Summary: Researchers used satellite data to generate a global long-term GPP dataset and found that NIRv can accurately capture the seasonal and annual variations of GPP. Analysis at 104 flux sites showed that this dataset can effectively estimate global vegetation primary productivity.

Improved dryland carbon flux predictions with explicit consideration of water-carbon coupling

Mallory L. Barnes et al.

Summary: DryFlux is a product that combines in situ carbon flux measurements with remote sensing and meteorological observations using machine learning, accurately predicting the variability of carbon uptake in dryland ecosystems. This approach can serve as an improved benchmark for earth system models in drylands, prompting a more sensitive consideration of the impact of water limitation on the carbon cycle.
