The impact of terrain model source and resolution on snow avalanche modeling

Aubrey Miller et al.

Summary: Accurate digital elevation models (DEMs) are crucial for natural hazard models. This study uses satellite photogrammetry and topographic lidar to generate high-resolution DEMs and investigates the sensitivity of simulation results to the source and spatial resolution of the DEM.

Automated avalanche hazard indication mapping on a statewide scale

Yves Buhler et al.

Summary: Snow avalanche hazard mapping has a tradition in the European Alps, but is only available for selected areas. To address this gap and predict the impact of climate change, an automated approach was developed to generate hazard indication maps based on digital elevation models. The results showed that a significant area in the canton of Grisons can be affected by avalanches, with the presence of forests reducing the endangered area. This approach can be applied globally, providing reproducible hazard indication mapping.

Three-dimensional and real-scale modeling of flow regimes in dense snow avalanches

Xingyue Li et al.

Summary: Snow avalanches are a significant hazard in mountainous regions, and their diverse flow behaviors make them difficult to understand and mitigate. This study utilizes a three-dimensional material point method to explore snow avalanches on complex terrains, identifying different flow regimes and characteristics such as fractures and compaction in the snow. The MPM modeling is validated with a real avalanche event, demonstrating its potential as a tool for studying avalanche dynamics in various conditions.

Intercomparison of photogrammetric platforms for spatially continuous snow depth mapping

Lucie A. Eberhard et al.

Summary: This study compared different photogrammetric platforms for snow depth mapping in alpine terrain, showing that the accuracy was highest for the UAV platform, followed by the airplane platform and lowest for the satellite platform. Independent validation of the photogrammetric products indicated some discrepancies between the snow depth maps and manual measurements.
