Prediction of estuarine water quality using interpretable machine learning approach

Shuo Wang et al.

Summary: Estuaries are major sources of pollution in coastal areas, and estuarine water quality prediction models can provide early warnings to prevent disasters. This study developed machine learning models to predict NH4+-N in the Xiaoqing River estuary, China, finding a strong nonlinear relationship between estuarine NH4+-N and NH4+-N of the upper reaches. The explanations from the model highlighted the critical impact of two monitoring stations in the upper reaches on estuarine water quality.

Trends in Europe storm surge extremes match the rate of sea-level rise

Francisco M. Calafat et al.

Summary: Coastal communities worldwide are already experiencing the disastrous impacts of climate change, particularly through variations in extreme sea levels. Understanding the importance of sea-level rise and changes in storm surge activity in altering the likelihood of extreme events is crucial for coastal adaptation measures.

Century-Scale Reconstruction of Water Storage Changes of the Largest Lake in the Inner Mongolia Plateau Using a Machine Learning Approach

Chenyu Fan et al.

Summary: The study aims to reconstruct the water storage changes of Lake Hulun over the past century, with results showing the highest water storage in the 1960s and the lowest point in the 1930s-1940s. The XGBoost model demonstrates effective performance in predicting century-scale water storage variations, with precipitation being the most influential factor.

A global analysis of subsidence, relative sea-level change and coastal flood exposure

Robert J. Nicholls et al.

Summary: Land subsidence and uplift impact the rate of sea-level rise, with coastal populations experiencing faster rates of relative sea-level rise. The global average relative sea-level rise is 2.5 mm per year, but coastal inhabitants may experience up to four times faster rise due to subsidence.

Extreme sea levels at different global warming levels

Claudia Tebaldi et al.

Summary: This study used a multimethod approach to describe changes in extreme sea levels driven by changes in mean sea level associated with global warming levels from 1.5 to 5 degrees C. The findings suggest that by 2100, over 50% of the locations considered will experience present-day 100-yr extreme-sea-level events at least once a year, even under 1.5 degrees C of global warming. The tropics appear to be more sensitive to these changes compared to Northern high latitudes.

Exploring deep learning capabilities for surge predictions in coastal areas

Timothy Tiggeloven et al.

Summary: In this study, the capabilities of artificial intelligence in predicting sea-level variability components were explored, with the LSTM model generally outperforming others. Increasing predictor variables complexity improves model performance but leads to longer computation time. The improvement in performance is still insufficient to fully capture observed dynamics in certain regions.
