Future urban heat island influence on precipitation

B. M. Steensen et al.

Summary: Urbanization and global warming have significant impacts on the environment, particularly on precipitation patterns and extreme precipitation events. This study examines the relationship between Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and precipitation changes in two megacities, Paris and Shanghai, using a regional convection-permitting model. The results show that urban-induced precipitation is expected to decrease in a warmer future climate, mainly due to reduced summer precipitation. The study highlights the importance of future urban planning in mitigating the damage caused by extreme precipitation events.

Large eddy simulation of the atmospheric boundary layer to investigate the Coriolis effect on wind and turbulence characteristics over different terrains

Bin Lu et al.

Summary: This study reproduces a realistic one-thousand-meter height atmospheric boundary layer with wind veering phenomenon and examines the effects of the Coriolis force and terrain type on wind and turbulence characteristics. Results show that the Coriolis effect varies in three orthogonal directions, with a more significant impact on turbulence integral length scale in the streamwise direction.

Impacts of Long-Term Urbanization on Summer Rainfall Climatology in Yangtze River Delta Agglomeration of China

Longfei Han et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of urbanization on summer rainfall in the Yangtze River Delta using long-term observations and numerical simulations. The study finds that urbanization has led to increased summer rainfall in the region, particularly through the intensification of heavy rainfall events. The numerical simulations reproduce the observed urban rain island effect and show that urban expansion has increased summer rainfall over urban areas by an average of 51.91 mm. However, the urban rain island effect weakens in the later stages of urbanization, potentially due to the strengthening of precipitation-inhibiting effects.

A high-resolution monitoring approach of canopy urban heat island using a random forest model and multi-platform observations

Shihan Chen et al.

Summary: Due to rapid urbanization and intense human activities, the urban heat island effect has become a more concerning climatic and environmental issue. This study proposes a method for evaluating the canopy urban heat island intensity at high resolution by using remote sensing data and machine learning. The results show that wind speed is negatively correlated with the urban heat island effect, while wind direction is strongly correlated with the offset direction of the urban heat island effect.

Summary: The rapid urbanization of the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration has led to the urban heat island effect, which is further enhanced by the complex terrain. Implementing idealized measures can reduce this effect and regulate the urban ecosystem, providing feasible suggestions for improving the livelihood of future city residents.

Hourly extreme precipitation changes under the influences of regional and urbanization effects in Beijing

Yufeng Yuan et al.

Summary: Short duration extreme precipitation has devastating impacts on city areas, with urbanization and climate change complicating the examination of long-term changes in precipitation extremes. The urban area of Beijing has seen more hourly precipitation extremes since 2004, particularly inclined to occurring during night-time.

Impact of Urban Roughness Representation on Regional Hydrometeorology: An Idealized Study

Summary: This study investigated the impact of UCPs and aerodynamic parameterization on climate effects in urban regions. It found that urban morphology representation has limited impact on mean momentum transfer, but becomes most significant during rainfall periods due to the role of surface drag in dictating moisture convergence. LES-based parameterization has evident impacts on near-surface wind speed.

Summary: This study investigates the urban modification of rainfall over Nanjing, China, using climatological analyses and high-resolution model simulations. Results show that the urban canopy parameters and physics schemes significantly influence spatial and temporal rainfall variability, with performance varying for storms of different synoptic conditions. Urban canopy induces positive rainfall anomalies ranging from 60% to 100% of the storm-total rainfall, highlighting the importance of characterizing urban canopy in examining urban convective rainfall.
