A New Perspective on Drought Propagation: Causality

Haiyun Shi et al.

Summary: This study challenges the reliability of using linear or non-linear correlation to study drought propagation, and proposes a causality analysis method based on pure observations. The effectiveness of this method in detecting drought propagation, especially in determining the direction, is proven.

Detecting the causal influence of thermal environments among climate regions in the United States

Xueli Yang et al.

Summary: This study applied the convergent cross mapping algorithm to detect and quantify the causal influence among different climate regions in the contiguous U.S. in response to temperature perturbations. The results showed that the causal network constructed by this algorithm can distinguish the causal links from spurious ones rendered by statistical correlation. The study also found that the Ohio Valley region plays an important role in the long-term thermal environments in the U.S.

Critical transitions in the hydrological system: early-warning signals and network analysis

Xueli Yang et al.

Summary: One critical challenge in studying Earth's hydroclimate system is to predict whether the system approaches a critical threshold in the face of global environmental changes. Through analyzing early-warning signals and system-based network structures, we identified critical transitions in hydrological processes and found an enhanced synchronization among urban precipitation patterns. These findings have important implications for predicting and understanding critical transitions in hydrological processes.

Statistical physics approaches to the complex Earth system

Jingfang Fan et al.

Summary: The complexity and variability of the Earth system present significant challenges, but the development of new statistical physics and complex network techniques has significantly improved our understanding and predictive capabilities of the Earth system. Combining statistical physics and complex systems science approaches offers new insights and perspectives for understanding the dynamics of the Earth systems.
