Derivation of a near-surface damping model for the Groningen gas field

E. Ruigrok et al.

Summary: Seismic damping of near-surface deposits plays a crucial role in site-response analysis for seismic hazard assessment. In Groningen, the Netherlands, gas production induces seismicity, and using a deep vertical array network of 200 meters depth allows for dampinestimate. The up-down method was found to be more robust and does not require elastic propagation corrections.

Space-time monitoring of groundwater fluctuations with passive seismic interferometry

Shujuan Mao et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a cost-effective method using seismograph arrays to monitor aquifers and measure hydrological changes through seismic velocity variations. The study reveals that seismic velocity changes in the groundwater systems near Los Angeles are consistent with groundwater levels measured in wells and surface deformations detected by satellite sensing, but provide higher temporal and depth resolution. This approach can identify patterns of groundwater storage changes under different pumping practices and provide valuable information for sustainable freshwater management.

Implications of the statistics of seismicity recorded within the Groningen gas field

Jeannot Trampert et al.

Summary: In this study, we reanalyzed the induced seismicity data from the Groningen gas reservoir and found that the distributions of seismic moments and interevent times exhibited power law behavior. By constraining the average loading of elastic energy within the reservoir, we can explain the occurrence of seismic events. We also proposed a new machine learning approach for distinguishing correlated and independent events.

Physics-Based Relationship for Pore Pressure and Vertical Stress Monitoring Using Seismic Velocity Variations

Eldert Fokker et al.

Summary: This study develops a physics-based model to explain how fluctuations in groundwater table and pore pressure affect seismic velocity variations. The results demonstrate that this model can be used for monitoring pore pressure and effectively predict changes in seismic velocity.
