The role of Lagrangian drift in the geometry, kinematics and dynamics of surface waves

Nick Pizzo et al.

Summary: This paper examines the role of Lagrangian mean flow or drift in modulating the characteristics of rotational and irrotational deep-water surface gravity waves. A general theory for progressive waves on vertically sheared steady Lagrangian mean flow is derived and mapped to the Eulerian frame. The Lagrangian viewpoint allows for flexibility and reveals key physical wave behavior. It also discusses the application of these results in remote sensing and ocean wave modeling.

Observations of Strongly Modulated Surface Wave and Wave Breaking Statistics at a Submesoscale Front

Teodor Vrecica et al.

Summary: This study provides novel high-resolution airborne remote sensing and in situ observations of wave-current interaction at a submesoscale front near the island of O'ahu, Hawaii. The results show strong modulation of the surface wave field across the frontal boundary, leading to significant spatial inhomogeneities in the wave and wave breaking statistics.

Direct observational evidence of an oceanic dual kinetic energy cascade and its seasonality

Variability of surface gravity wave field over a realistic cyclonic eddy

Gwendal Marechal et al.

Summary: Recent remote sensing measurements and numerical studies have revealed that surface gravity waves interact with small-scale open ocean currents, which leads to modifications in the significant wave height, wave frequency, and wave direction. This study investigates the interactions between surface gravity waves and a large and isolated realistic cyclonic eddy, and finds that the presence of submesoscale structures resulting from the eddy destabilization significantly affects the spatial variability of wave parameters, such as wave direction, mean period, and significant wave height.

Coherent Pathways for Subduction From the Surface Mixed Layer at Ocean Fronts

Mara Freilich et al.

Summary: This study explores the pathways and mechanisms of how water from the surface mixed layer makes its way into the pycnocline in frontal zones. It reveals that subduction is transient and influenced by spatial and temporal scales, with specific submesoscale features supporting the process. Unlike forced submesoscale processes that sequester low PV anomalies, subducted water masses can have elevated PV levels. The study highlights the role of submesoscale dynamics coupled with mesoscale frontogenesis in subduction processes.

Particle description of the interaction between wave packets and point vortices

Summary: This paper explores an idealized model of the ocean surface where surface wave packets and point vortices interact. By analyzing stable and unstable solutions, as well as the influence of wave packets on vortices, it is found that wave-induced drift can stabilize vortex formation.

Modulation of Surface Gravity Waves by Internal Waves

Luc Lenain et al.

Summary: Internal waves are a common feature of the open ocean and coastal waters, modulating surface waves and generating characteristic rough- and smooth-banded structures. The interaction between surface gravity waves and internal wave processes was quantitatively investigated using a combination of airborne remote sensing observations and in situ measurements off the coast of Point Sal, California. The study found that surface waves are significantly modulated by the currents induced by internal waves, leading to rapid modifications of directional and spectral properties over short spatial scales.

Wind- and Wave-Driven Ocean Surface Boundary Layer in a Frontal Zone: Roles of Submesoscale Eddies and Ekman-Stokes Transport

Jianguo Yuan et al.

Summary: Large-eddy simulations investigate the impact of a horizontal frontal zone on the ocean surface boundary layers driven by wind and waves, showing changes in temperature structure, horizontal current, and turbulence with varying angles between the wind and front. The net heating and cooling of the boundary layer can be explained by the depth-integrated advective buoyancy flux, while variations in temperature profiles are affected by depth-dependent advective buoyancy flux and submesoscale eddies. Eddy-induced horizontal mixing enhances horizontal mixing anisotropically, particularly stronger to the right of the wind direction.
