Intermittent Dissipation at Kinetic Scales in the Turbulent Reconnection Outflow

S. Y. Huang et al.

Summary: Based on high-resolution data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, this study investigates energy dissipation in turbulent reconnection outflow in the terrestrial magnetotail. The results show intermittent dissipation at kinetic scales in the turbulent reconnection outflow, accompanied by electron heating and an increase in temperature in intermittent structures and regions with strong currents.

Intense Energy Conversion Events at the Magnetopause Boundary Layer

Hengyan Man et al.

Summary: This paper investigates intense energy conversion events (IECEs) at the dayside magnetopause boundary layer (MBL) using high-resolution data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft. The study found that most events occurred in local reconnecting current sheets and there were more electron-only reconnections than standard reconnections. Additionally, secondary reconnections and Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices play an important role in the overall energy conversion at the MBL.

Contrasting the Mechanisms of Reconnection-driven Electron Acceleration with In Situ Observations from MMS in the Terrestrial Magnetotail

Wenqing Ma et al.

Summary: This article presents a statistical study on electron acceleration in Earth's magnetotail using in situ satellite observations. The study finds that larger acceleration rates tend to occur in outflows with higher speeds. The mechanisms of betatron and first-order Fermi acceleration are intensified near the neutral sheet, while E (divide divide) acceleration is significant not only near the neutral sheet but also in the separatrix region. The study also suggests that acceleration near the X line is comparable to that in the outflow, contradicting previous studies.

In Situ Signature of Cyclotron Resonant Heating in the Solar Wind

Trevor A. Bowen et al.

Summary: The dissipation of magnetized turbulence is crucial for understanding energy transfer and heating in astrophysical environments. This study connects the presence of ion-cyclotron waves to resonant damping in observed proton-velocity distributions using the framework of quasilinear theory, shedding light on the significant heating of the solar wind.

Observations of Secondary Magnetic Reconnection in the Turbulent Reconnection Outflow

M. Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents the first evidence of secondary reconnections occurring in the turbulent outflow in Earth's magnetotail. Fourteen secondary reconnections were identified, primarily involving electron-only reconnections, dissipating magnetic energy in the outflow region far from the primary X line, lasting for about one and a half hours.

The Importance of Electron Landau Damping for the Dissipation of Turbulent Energy in Terrestrial Magnetosheath Plasma

A. S. Afshari et al.

Summary: The Heliospheric plasma turbulence plays a crucial role in transferring energy from large-scale magnetic field and plasma flow fluctuations to smaller scales for dissipation. The MMS mission provides high-quality measurements of electromagnetic fields and electron velocity distributions, and reveals that electron Landau damping, asymmetric signatures, and significant electron energization rates are key factors in the dissipation of turbulent energy in the magnetosheath intervals.

Statistical Survey of Collisionless Dissipation in the Terrestrial Magnetosheath

Yanwen Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the statistical distribution of kinetic dissipation in the terrestrial magnetosheath using in-situ data from the MMS Mission. Results show that the compressive pressure-dilatation channel and the incompressive pressure-strain channel contribute to the internal energy of protons and electrons in weakly collisional, turbulent magnetosheath plasma. The analysis also includes a spatial filtering approach to quantify plasma heating at different scales.
