Accuracy and precision of frequency-size distribution scaling parameters as a function of dynamic range of observations: example of the Gutenberg-Richter law b-value for earthquakes

G-M Geffers et al.

Summary: Many natural hazards, such as earthquakes, exhibit a scaling relationship between the frequency and size of events. This study derives an analytic expression for the bias in estimating the scaling exponent, b, based on the dynamic range of the data. The results explain why the likelihood of large events is often underestimated in small catalogs with limited dynamic range, which has implications for assessing hazard levels.

The Linearized Hellinger-Kantorovich Distance

Tianji Cai et al.

Summary: In this paper, we study the local linearization of the Hellinger-Kantorovich distance using its Riemannian structure. We provide explicit expressions for the logarithmic and exponential maps, and identify a suitable notion of a Riemannian inner product. By working with this local linearization, samples can be represented as vectors in the tangent space of a suitable reference measure, allowing for faster computations and access to various data analysis tools while still maintaining the descriptive power of the Hellinger-Kantorovich metric.

Regional seismic velocity changes following the 2019 Mw 7.1 Ridgecrest, California earthquake from autocorrelations and P/S converted waves

Y. Lu et al.

Summary: The study uses autocorrelations and continuous waveform data to investigate the transient changes in seismic velocities caused by the Ridgecrest earthquake, revealing wide regional velocity drops concentrated at depths of 1-3 km. These drops are instantaneous but followed by rapid recoveries.

The effect of magnitude uncertainty on the Gutenberg-Richter b-value estimation and the magnitude-frequency distribution: 'what hump?'

Matteo Taroni

Summary: The uncertainties in earthquake magnitudes have a minimal impact on the estimation of the Gutenberg-Richter b-value if these uncertainties are uniformly distributed. However, a non-uniform distribution of errors can significantly affect the estimation of the b-value, leading to a peak in the magnitude-frequency distribution. Through simulations, it is possible to determine the magnitude of the estimation bias and prevent its impact.

Redatuming physical systems using symmetric autoencoders

Pawan Bharadwaj et al.

Summary: This paper examines physical systems with hidden states that are indirectly observed through repeated measurements corrupted by unaccounted-for nuisance parameters. A network-based representation learns to disentangle coherent information relative to the state from incoherent nuisance information relative to the sensing. Instead of using physical models, the representation utilizes symmetry and stochastic regularization to guide an autoencoder architecture called SymAE. It enables the creation of virtual data instances with uniformized nuisances across measurements, a process known as redatuming.

Which metric on the space of collider events?

Tianji Cai et al.

Summary: This study explores the best metric for the space of collider events and discovers that the Hellinger-Kantorovich distance is a suitable unbalanced optimal transport distance with a Riemannian structure that can be efficiently linearized. Based on this distance, a particle linearized unbalanced optimal transport framework is developed and demonstrates its efficacy in boosted jet tagging.

Numerical comparison of time-, frequency- and wavelet-domain methods for coda wave interferometry

Congcong Yuan et al.

Summary: Temporal changes in subsurface properties, such as seismic wave speeds, can be monitored by measuring phase shifts in the coda of seismic waveforms. Popular algorithms include windowed cross correlation and trace stretching. Numerical experiments validate the accuracy and performance of these methods, showing that wavelet methods, especially WTS, provide useful information on the depth of velocity changes.

Graph-Space Optimal Transport Concept for Time-Domain Full-Waveform Inversion of Ocean-Bottom Seismometer Data: Nankai Trough Velocity Structure Reconstructed From a 1D Model

Andrzej Gorszczyk et al.

Summary: Reconstructing deep structures with full-waveform inversion (FWI) of wide-angle ocean-bottom seismometer (OBS) data remains challenging due to the nonlinearity and sparsity of the data. Investigating the graph-space optimal transport (GSOT) technique shows promise in overcoming the cycle-skipping problem at the initial FWI stage and guiding the reconstruction towards a precise velocity model, even when initial constraints are limited.

Probing the Damage Zone at Parkfield

Summary: Rocks exhibit complex nonlinear elastic and anelastic behavior in the laboratory, showing important relationships with stress, strain, and porosity. Near the San Andreas Fault, strong nonlinear elastic behavior characterizing the damage zone is observed, while away from the fault, this behavior diminishes.
