Accessing biochar's porosity using a new low field NMR approach and its impacts on the retention of highly mobile herbicides

Leticia de Pierri et al.

Summary: Agrowaste biochars synthesized at different pyrolysis temperatures showed potential to retain highly mobile herbicides, with macropores appearing as main arteries for herbicide diffusion. Herbicide aging significantly affected sorption, especially for tebuthiuron, while soils amended with biochars at high rates showed low sorption potential, requiring incorporation strategies for remediation.

Soil hydraulic interpretation of nuclear magnetic resonance measurements based on circular and triangular capillary models

Stephan Costabel et al.

Summary: Geophysical nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) applications are used to estimate pore size distributions in rocks and sediments. Recent research has shown that NMR joint inversion can reliably predict water retention function under fast diffusion conditions, but tend to overestimate capillary-based hydraulic conductivity. Further development of the approach will consider tortuosity measurements to enhance its applicability for coarse soils.
