Deep learning and boosting framework for piping erosion susceptibility modeling: spatial evaluation of agricultural areas in the semi-arid region

Yunzhi Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared multiple algorithms and found that the Deep Boosting model performed best in piping erosion susceptibility mapping. The results showed that 41% of agricultural lands are very sensitive to piping erosion, aiding resource managers and planners in making effective decisions.

Piping formation and distribution in the semi-arid Northern Negev environment: A new conceptual model

Ariel Nahlieli et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of soil cracks and hillslope aspects on the development and spatial distribution of soil piping, and proposes a conceptual model. The results demonstrate the significant influence of soil properties on piping formation processes, but do not fully explain the differences in spatial distribution between north- and south-facing slopes.

The Compositionality of Facial Expressions

Carmel Sofer et al.

Summary: The principle of compositionality, which suggests that the meaning of a complex expression is determined by its parts and the operations performed on them, applies not only to language but also to interpreting facial expressions. This study provides strong evidence that the composite meaning of facial expressions is formed by the meaning of its constituting expressions and the operations performed on them. The findings have important implications for understanding the meaning of facial expressions and human communication.

GIS-based landslide susceptibility assessment using optimized hybrid machine learning methods

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposed landslide susceptibility evaluation models based on bivariate statistical correlation analysis and optimization of different kernel functions in Zichang City, China. By analyzing spatial patterns, three different models were compared to establish landslide susceptibility maps for the region, providing valuable information for natural hazards prevention efforts in the future.

Change detection in piping, gully head forms, and mechanisms

Narges Kariminejad et al.

Summary: This study focused on the erosional processes in loess-derived soils in semi-arid regions. Fieldwork and geomorphological analysis were conducted to understand the connections between landform patterns and underlying mechanisms. The data collected in 2018 and 2019 revealed trends in the transformation of collapsed pipes and gully heads.

Deep learning for insider threat detection: Review, challenges and opportunities

Shuhan Yuan et al.

Summary: Insider threats are one of the most challenging threats in cyberspace, and traditional machine learning based detection methods struggle to accurately capture the behavior differences between insiders and normal users. Deep learning models show potential in improving the performance of insider threat detection, but face challenges such as lack of labeled data and adaptive attacks.

An Oblivious Approach to Machine Translation Quality Estimation

Itamar Elmakias et al.

Summary: This study investigates the concept of oblivious MT-QE and proposes a system based on sentence cohesiveness. Testing on standard competition datasets for various language pairs shows that reasonable MT-QE can be carried out even in the restrictive oblivious setting.
