Multiple sulfur isotopes discriminate organoclastic and methane-based sulfate reduction by sub-seafloor pyrite formation

Jiarui Liu et al.

Summary: The marine sulfate inventory is responsible for roughly half of the organic matter mineralization globally in marine sediments, through microbial sulfate reduction. Multiple sulfur isotope ratios were measured to trace the two different sulfate reduction processes. Different sulfur isotope compositions were found in shelf sediments compared to slope sediments, indicating variations in the processes of sulfate reduction.

Nanoscale trace-element zoning in pyrite framboids and implications for paleoproxy applications

Daniel D. Gregory et al.

Summary: Pyrite framboids can be used to track the trace-element composition of the water column in which they formed. However, it is important to note that the enrichment of trace elements in pyrite occurs during early diagenesis, rather than in the water column itself. Therefore, the interpretation of pyrite chemistry should be done carefully, considering the influence of diagenesis.

Increased interglacial atmospheric CO2 levels followed the mid-Pleistocene Transition

Masanobu Yamamoto et al.

Summary: Atmospheric CO2 and polar ice volume have a strong coupling over the past 805,000 years. However, the extent of coupling during times of lower-amplitude ice-volume variability is unknown due to the lack of continuous high-resolution CO2 records. By utilizing the relationship between CO2 concentration and leaf-wax delta C-13 resulting from changes in vegetation in East India, we reconstructed the atmospheric CO2 for the past 1,460,000 years. The findings suggest that deep-ocean circulation controlled the long-term CO2 trend and the interaction between CO2, continental ice, and deep-ocean circulation was reorganized during the mid-Pleistocene Transition.

Tracing the Methane Events by Stable Carbon Isotopes of Benthic Foraminifera at Glacial Periods in the Andaman Sea

Yue Cen et al.

Summary: Stable isotopes of benthic foraminiferal shells are used to reconstruct past methane release events in the Andaman Sea. The study reveals long-term fluctuations in methane emission, with six events occurring during glacial sea-level lowstands. The trigger mechanisms for these events are believed to be related to hydrate destabilization and sudden changes in sedimentation.

Effects of sulfate reduction processes on the trace element geochemistry of sedimentary pyrite in modern seep environments

Zhiyong Lin et al.

Summary: Although the influence of early diagenesis on the trace element patterns of sedimentary pyrite has been suggested, there is limited research on this hypothesis in modern marine environments. This study examines two methane-seep sites in the South China Sea to investigate how organoclastic sulfate reduction (OSR) and sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (SD-AOM) affect the trace element geochemistry of pyrite. The results show that different sulfate reduction processes during early diagenesis significantly influence the element contents of pyrite in methane-rich environments.

Active methanogenesis during the melting of Marinoan snowball Earth

Zhouqiao Zhao et al.

Summary: The deglaciation of the Marinoan snowball Earth ice age was associated with intense continental weathering, recovery of primary productivity, transient marine euxinia, and potentially extensive CH4 emission. It is proposed that the deglacial CH4 emissions may have provided positive feedbacks for ice melting and global warming. The study suggests that active methanogenesis was fueled by methyl sulfides produced in sulfidic seawater during the deglacial recovery of marine primary productivity.
