Carbonatites: Classification, Sources, Evolution, and Emplacement

Gregory M. Yaxley et al.

Summary: Carbonatites are igneous rocks formed in the crust that consist mainly of carbonate minerals and minor phosphates, oxides, and silicates. They are associated with deposits of rare earth elements and niobium, which are important for high-tech applications.

Experimental constraints on truly conjugate alkaline silicate - carbonatite melt pairs

Daniel Weidendorfer et al.

Summary: The physical separation of immiscible carbonatites from CO2-bearing alkaline silicate melts is commonly observed in alkaline rock suites. This study presents experimental evidence for the crystallization and liquid immiscibility processes between complex CO2-bearing subvolcanic basanitic, nephelinitic, and nepheline-syenitic compositions. The results show that the separation of carbonatites occurs within a specific temperature window, and the formation of alkaline silicate rocks can be attributed to the fractionation and crystallization of the silicate melt.

Diamondiferous lamproites of the Luangwa Rift in central Africa and links to remobilized cratonic lithosphere

Ntando S. Ngwenya et al.

Summary: Mesozoic diamondiferous lamproite pipes in the Luangwa Valley of Zambia represent the precursor to the East African Rift System and provide a unique insight into early-stage cratonic rift evolution. The mineral composition and evolutionary trends of the volcanic rocks suggest similarities with other lamproite provinces globally. The presence of an Archean mantle root beneath the area indicates significant involvement of ancient cratonic mantle domains during the rift development in south-central Africa.
