Aquatic ecosystem responses to environmental and climatic changes in NE China since the last deglaciation (∼17, 500 cal yr BP) tracked by diatom assemblages from Lake Moon

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The scarcity of research on lake ecosystem responses to large-scale climate oscillations in NE China limits our ability to inform conservation practices and policies in the context of recent global warming. A high-resolution sedimentary diatom record from Lake Moon reveals significant shifts in diatom dominance corresponding to fluctuations in the climate regime since the last deglaciation, indicating the overarching control of climate change on aquatic ecosystem changes in the mountain regions of NE China.

Variations of the East Asian monsoon over the past 800 kyr constrained by the boron isotope composition of paleo-rainwater inferred from loess-paleosol deposits in NE China

Fang Lei et al.

Summary: The boron isotope geochemistry of the loess-paleosol sequence in Northeast China can serve as a potential proxy for tracing changes in the East Asian summer monsoon since the mid-Pleistocene. Through mathematical inversion calculations, it was determined that the boron in the loess-paleosol layers mainly comes from atmospheric precipitation and silicate weathering. Synchronous variations in delta B-11 values and other proxies indicate a connection between the boron isotope composition and the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon.

Loess accumulation in Harbin with implications for late Quaternary aridification in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China

Peng Wu et al.

Summary: The study reveals a long-term drying trend in the Songnen Plain since 0.46 million years ago, with two significant drying events occurring around 300,000 and 380,000 years ago. However, the climate in the Songnen Plain became wetter and warmer since 180,000 years ago under the background of long-term drought. The aridification in the Songnen Plain was collectively influenced by global ice/temperature changes, regional tectonics, and drainage changes.
