Spatial variations of the effective elastic thickness and internal load fraction in the Cascadia subduction zone

Chuanhai Yu et al.

Summary: The effective elastic thickness (T-e) and internal load fraction (F) are important indicators for studying plate convergence and understanding geodynamic evolution. This study used high-resolution maps to analyze the distribution of T-e and F in the Cascadia subduction zone, revealing correlations between different mechanical coupling states and other geological features.

New Maps of Global Geological Provinces and Tectonic Plates

Derrick Hasterok et al.

Summary: Accurate spatial models of tectonic plates and geological terranes are crucial for analyzing geoscientific data and developing lithosphere models. This study presents a global compilation of these models, refined with various constraints and showing improved correlation with earthquake and volcano occurrences. While there is room for improvement, these digital maps provide a consistent data standard for geoscientific databases.

Spatial Characteristics of Recycled and Primordial Reservoirs in the Deep Mantle

M. G. Jackson et al.

Summary: This study reevaluated the spatial distribution of geochemical reservoirs and their link to mantle convection, indicating that high-He-3/He-4 is not geographically confined to the LLSVPs. The research suggests that the generation of high-He-3/He-4 is dependent on plume dynamics rather than geography, while hotspots sampling recycled continental crust are closely linked to LLSVPs.

Evolution and demise of passive margins through grain mixing and damage

David Bercovici et al.

Summary: The initiation of subduction, or the sinking of cold lithospheric plates into the mantle, is a key mystery in understanding plate tectonics on Earth. The weakening of passive margins, through mechanisms such as spontaneous grain damage and mixing between mineral phases, can lead to the facilitation of passive margin collapse. Over approximately 100 million years, bands of mixing and weakening can develop in lithospheric rocks, resulting in anisotropic viscosity that is strong to lateral forces but weak to bending and sinking.

What Controls Effective Elastic Thickness of the Lithosphere in the Pacific Ocean?

Zhezhe Lu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the effective elastic thickness (Te) in the Pacific Ocean varies between different geological structures. The Te is influenced by factors such as lithospheric age, temperature, and geological processes.

Seismic evidence for a plume-modified oceanic lithosphere-asthenosphere system beneath Cape Verde

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: By using a new method of jointly inverting seismic data, a new 3-D shear wave velocity (V-s) model beneath the Cape Verde hotspot down to 400 km depth has been determined, revealing two V-s discontinuities at depths of around 15 and 60 km beneath volcanic islands. High-V-s anomalies in the uppermost mantle beneath the Atlantic Ocean and low-V-s anomalies beneath volcanic islands suggest a plume-modified lithosphere-asthenosphere system beneath the hotspot.

The role of edge-driven convection in the generation of volcanism - Part 1: A 2D systematic study

Antonio Manjon-Cabeza Cordoba et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of edge-driven convection (EDC) model on magmatic activity, finding that mantle viscosity and activation energy are key parameters influencing EDC. However, even the maximum predicted melting volumes are insufficient to fully explain island-building volcanic activity in certain regions.
