Surface Deformation Surrounding the 2021 Mw 7.2 Haiti Earthquake Illuminated InSAR Observations

Harriet Zoe Yin et al.

Summary: Earthquakes in Haiti, such as the 2010 Mw 7.0 earthquake and the recent 2021 Mw 7.2 earthquake, pose a major threat to the region. The Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone (EPGFZ) is a significant source of seismic hazard in the southern peninsula of Haiti. This study used satellite-based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data to analyze the ground deformation patterns associated with the 2021 earthquake, revealing the broad coseismic deformation field, detailed secondary fault structures, and postseismic shallow slip along the unruptured section of the EPGF.

Oblique Convergence Causes Both Thrust and Strike-Slip Ruptures During the 2021 M 7.2 Haiti Earthquake

Ryo Okuwaki et al.

Summary: On August 14, 2021, a devastating magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Southern Haiti, causing severe damage and over 2000 casualties. Integrated seismological analyses revealed that the earthquake first ruptured a blind thrust fault and then propagated to a disconnected strike-slip fault. The complex rupture process suggests that the regional deformation is accommodated by a network of segmented faults with diverse faulting conditions.

Citizen seismology helps decipher the 2021 Haiti earthquake

E. Calais et al.

Summary: On August 14, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude Nippes earthquake occurred in Haiti within the same fault zone as the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010. However, field access was limited during the event and conventional seismometers were inoperative. Citizen seismometers installed in 2019 provided critical near-field data to quickly understand the mainshock mechanism and monitor aftershocks. Machine learning applied to data from the closest citizen seismometer allowed accurate forecasting of aftershocks, demonstrating the utility of citizen science in understanding major earthquakes.

The 8 April 1860 Jour de Paques Earthquake Sequence in Southern Haiti

Summary: A research on seismic activities in the Tiburon Peninsula reveals that the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone (EPGFZ) still poses a grave threat to southern Haiti, especially the rupture area between the catastrophic Leogane earthquake in 2010 and the deadly Nippes earthquakes in 2021. Additionally, the study uncovers a significant earthquake and the aftershock sequence from the 19th century that occurred in the region.

Summary: The 7.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Nippes, Haiti on August 14, 2021 ruptured multiple segments of the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault Zone. The fault slip occurred on both sides of a restraining bend, resulting in reverse-slip and left-lateral slip. Afterslip also occurred at shallow depths in the vicinity of the coseismic rupture areas.

Summary: This article investigated the aftershock activity of the Mw 7.2 earthquake in Haiti in August 2021 and derived crustal velocity models for the region based on data from installed stations. The study revealed the delineation of three north-dipping structures with different strikes located to the north of the Enriquillo Plantain Garden fault, as well as two smaller aftershock clusters on the fault near the hypocenter area indicative of triggered seismicity. Focal mechanisms were consistent with coseismic slip inversion from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data.
