Development and Evaluation of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Cognitive Exercise Game: A Pilot Study

Sung-Jong Eun et al.

Summary: Recently, cognitive serious games have been used successfully to train cognitive abilities in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and related disorders. However, existing cognitive exercise games lack user interaction and personalized elements, leading to early user dropout and loss of interest. This study aims to design and develop a serious game with playful elements, a web-based mobile application system, and an AI-based difficulty level adjustment system to enhance user motivation and immersion. Results show that the AI-based cognitive exercise game is acceptable, interesting, and motivating for elderly people, and longer training on the game is associated with lower cognitive assessment scores. These findings suggest the potential value of serious games in clinical assessment of cognitive status for elderly users with different cognitive abilities.
