Species of the common discomycete genus Bisporella reassigned to at least four genera

James K. Mitchell et al.

Summary: By comparing morphological and molecular traits of species traditionally included in Bisporella, the researchers found that the genus is polyphyletic, with many typical members of the genus actually belonging to Calycina in Pezizellaceae. The type species of the genus, Bisporella pallescens, is conclusively linked with its asexual morph, Bispora antennata, and the genus Bisporella is abandoned as a later synonym of the monotypic genus Bispora and placed as sister to Hymenoscyphus in Helotiaceae. Bisporella resinicola represents an independent monotypic genus, Eustilbum, placed incertae sedis in Helotiales. Lastly, Bisporella subpallida is related to Phaeohelotium epiphyllum within Helotiaceae.

The haustorium as a driving force for speciation in thallus-forming Laboulbeniomycetes

Danny Haelewaters et al.

Summary: Laboulbeniomycetes is a class of fungi that have obligate associations with arthropod hosts, either for dispersal or as biotrophic parasites. This study focuses on the Herpomycetales and Laboulbeniales, presenting a One-Host-One-Parasite model for haustorial thallus-forming Laboulbeniomycetes. It discusses the importance of host specificity and microhabitat in governing host shifting, presence or absence of the fungus, abundance, effective host range, and geographic distribution. Suggestions for future research include fluorescent labeling of waxy lipids and mass spectrometry to evaluate the proposed hypothesis.

Laboulbeniomycetes: Intimate Fungal Associates of Arthropods

Danny Haelewaters et al.

Summary: Arthropod-fungus interactions involving Laboulbeniomycetes have been studied for centuries, with early uncertainties about their classification resolved through molecular phylogenetic studies. These filamentous Ascomycota are now understood to have intimate associations with their arthropod hosts, providing opportunities for further research in areas such as evolutionary biology and ecological relationships. Collaboration between mycologists and entomologists is crucial for advancements in understanding Laboulbeniomycetes and their interactions with hosts.

Reflections on Menisporopsis, Multiguttulispora and Tainosphaeria Using Molecular and Morphological Data

Martina Reblova et al.

Summary: This study on Menisporopsis, Multiguttulispora, and Tainosphaeria, saprobes inhabiting decaying plant material, utilized an integrated morpho-molecular characterization to assess their generic concepts and explore phylogenetic relationships. It revealed Menisporopsis as polyphyletic and proposed a new segregate genus, Arcuatospora. The Tainosphaeria complex was resolved into three genera, with Tainosphaeria s. str. accepted with five species and others transferred to new genera. Additionally, a new genus Flectospora was erected for a previously unrecognized fungus nested in the Tainosphaeria clade, based on molecular evidence.
