Gas adsorption characteristics changes in shale after supercritical CO2-water exposure at different pressures and temperatures

Kang Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of supercritical CO2-water exposure on the adsorption characteristics of shale, revealing that increasing exposure pressure and decreasing exposure temperature resulted in a gradual decrease in CH4 and CO2 adsorption capacity in shale due to alterations in mineral composition and pore structure. The study also found that the selectivity factor of CO2 to CH4 decreased with increasing exposure pressure and decreasing temperature, indicating the feasibility of CO2-enhanced shale gas recovery and sequestration even after exposure to ScCO2-water.

Effects of shale swelling and water-blocking on shale permeability

Qiao Lyu et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively describes the effects of deionized water and NaCl solution on shale permeability through permeability tests. The results show that NaCl solution imbibition leads to a stronger and more complex decrease in shale permeability compared to deionized water imbibition. In addition, shale swelling and water-blocking effects increase the sensitivity of shale permeability to pore pressure.

Competitive adsorption in CO2 enhancing shale gas: Low-field NMR measurement combined with molecular simulation for selectivity and displacement efficiency model

Taojie Lu et al.

Summary: This study develops an experimental method based on low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and in situ gas chromatography to quantitatively analyze the competitive adsorption of shale particles. Molecular simulations are also used to simulate the competitive adsorption and selectivity of CO2 and CH4 in shale nanopores. The results show that CO2 has a stronger adsorption ability than CH4, and a competitive adsorption model for CO2 and CH4 is established.

Competitive adsorption of methane and ethane on organic-rich shale at pressure up to 30 MPa: Experimental results and geological implications

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption behavior of methane, ethane, and their binary mixture in shale gas. The adsorption capacity and selectivity of ethane is higher than that of methane, and organic matter is the primary contributor to gas adsorption. The estimated gas-in-place (GIP) of binary gas is about 30% larger than that of pure methane and shows a two-stage trend with total organic carbon (TOC).

Effects of gas components, reservoir property and pore structure of shale gas reservoir on the competitive adsorption behavior of CO2 and CH4

Weidong Xie et al.

Summary: This study simulated the competitive adsorption behavior of CO2 and CH4 at in-situ conditions in shale gas reservoirs and analyzed the effects of binary gas components, shale properties, and pore structure on the CO2 adsorption affinity. Mathematical and geological models for CO2 injection into the Longmaxi shale gas reservoir to enhance CH4 recovery and achieve carbon sequestration were established based on experimental and reservoir parameters, and the feasibility and expected benefits were discussed.

Summary: Hydraulic fracturing has been the primary method for extracting unconventional shale gas, but using CO2 for shale gas exploitation is considered a better alternative. The impact of SC-CO2 on shale gas reservoirs varies during different stages of exploration, including drilling, fracturing, and injection.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption characteristics of shale under various pressure and temperature conditions and evaluates the predictive power of different theoretical adsorption models. The results suggest that the Langmuir, Toth, and Langmuir-Freundlich models are suitable for single component adsorption, while the Toth and LRC models are capable of capturing acceptable binary adsorption behavior.

High-Pressure Sorption of Methane, Ethane, and Their Mixtures on Shales from Sichuan Basin, China

Liang Huang et al.

Summary: High-pressure sorption isotherms were measured on shales from Sichuan Basin, China for CH4, C2H6, and their mixtures using a volumetric method. The temperature had a more notable effect on the binary excess sorption isotherms compared to gas composition. C2H6 showed stronger affinity than CH4, with its effect more significant at high pressures and less significant at low pressures.

Effect of supercritical CO2 extraction on CO2/CH4 competitive adsorption in Yanchang shale

Chao Qin et al.

Summary: This study found that the adsorption capacity of CO2/CH4 on shale decreases after ScCO2 extraction, but the feasibility of CS-ESGR is not affected. It is recommended to lower the reservoir pressure before injecting CO2 into shale reservoir, and consider the efficiency and engineering cost of CS-ESGR comprehensively.
