Fabricating high temperature stable Mo-Co9S8/Al2O3 catalyst for selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin to arenes

Xinyong Diao et al.

Summary: A stable catalyst with Mo-doped Co9S8 nanoparticles anchored on Al2O3 matrix was fabricated, which showed high selectivity and stability in the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin. The Mo-Co9S8 structure demonstrated strong ability in the adsorption and activation of oxygen-containing substrates, enabling effective C-O cleavage and avoiding undesirable hydrogenation reactions. The superior stability and water-resistance were attributed to the anchoring effect of Al2O3 matrix and protection of surface-rich Co9S8 species.

Utilization of guaiacol-based deep eutectic solvent for achieving a sustainable biorefinery

Chen Huang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a renewable deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment using lignin-derived guaiacol as the hydrogen bond donor. The DES showed excellent biomass fractionation efficiency after incorporating trace AlCl3 as the reinforcer, demonstrating the ability to remove lignin while preserving glucan. The physicochemical properties of the pretreated solids were comprehensively investigated, and the regenerated lignin from the DES pretreatment was analyzed, revealing significant cleavage of lignin beta-O-4 bond. This guaiacol-based DES could greatly contribute to establishing a closed-loop biorefinery sequence.

High yield production of levoglucosan via catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose at low temperature

Liqun Jiang et al.

Summary: This study achieved high yields of levoglucosan (LG) from cellulose pyrolysis using acid-base bifunctional magnetic Zn-Fe-C catalysts. The tested catalyst Zn-4@Fe-C-500 increased LG yield by 5.4 times and lowered the reaction temperature by 200 C through acid-base site synergistic effect. Moreover, the LG yield from catalytic cellulose pyrolysis at 300 C was much higher than that without catalyst at 500 C. The Zn4@Fe-C500 catalyst exhibited high recyclability. This study demonstrated great potential for industrial production of LG from cellulose at low temperatures.

Metal/acid bifunctional catalysts for the reductive catalytic fractionation of lignocellulose into phenols and holocellulose

Shinyoung Oh et al.

Summary: In this study, Mongolian oak lignocellulosic biomass was fractionated into solid residue and liquid oil via reductive catalytic fractionation. The Ru/WZr catalyst exhibited superior fractioning ability and catalytic activity, thanks to the synergistic effects of metal and acid. The reaction conditions were also optimized for maximizing the yield of monomeric compounds.
