Preparation of Highly Active Cu/SiO2 Catalysts for Furfural to 2-Methylfuran by Ammonia Evaporation Method

Xinxin Fu et al.

Summary: In this paper, the catalytic performance of a copper-chromium catalyst in the conversion of furfural to 2-methylfuran was studied. The catalyst prepared by the ammonia evaporation method showed better catalytic performance compared to the one prepared by the co-precipitation method. The catalyst prepared by the ammonia evaporation method exhibited higher selectivity to 2-methylfuran and almost complete conversion of furfural.

Tailoring the selectivity of Cu-based catalysts in the furfural hydrogenation reaction: Influence of the morphology of the silica support

C. P. Jimenez-Gomez et al.

Summary: The catalytic behavior of Cu nanoparticles supported on different porous silica supports was investigated. It was found that the commercial silica support had higher furfuryl alcohol yields but was more prone to deactivation. The hydrothermal SBA15 support had limited access to furfural due to the agglomeration of Cu nanoparticles and larger pore sizes. The addition of fluoride in the synthesis of mesoporous silica (mesocellular foam) facilitated furfural access and provided higher catalytic activity.

Synergetic effect of Cu0 -Cu+ derived from layered double hydroxides toward catalytic transfer hydrogenation reaction

Yingyu Ren et al.

Summary: This study prepared a Cu-based catalyst by transforming layered double hydroxides precursor, which showed promising catalytic behavior in the CTH reaction of furfural. The coexistence of Cu-0 and Cu+ on the catalyst surface and their synergistic effect were found to play a vital role in determining the catalytic behavior. The findings of this study provide important insights for other CTH reactions in the upgrading processes of biomass.

Regulation of Bronsted acid sites to enhance the decarburization of hexoses to furfural

Junbo Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, H-Beta zeolites with different Si/Al ratios were prepared and evaluated for decarburization catalysis to produce furfural. The synergistic catalytic effect between the *BEA channel and framework-Al was found to be crucial. Fructose showed the highest FAL yield, and cellulose also had a relatively high yield.

Atomically-ordered active sites in NiMo intermetallic compound toward low-pressure hydrodeoxygenation of furfural

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the superior catalytic performance of a NiMo intermetallic compound (IMC) catalyst in furfural hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) to 2-methylfuran (2-MF), highlighting the decisive effect of atomically-ordered active sites on activation of oxygen-containing functional groups and product selectivity. The ordered Ni-Mo bimetallic sites in IMC facilitate the activation and cleavage of C-OH bonds in intermediates, leading to enhanced production of 2-MF, which can potentially be extended to catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived platform molecules.

Navigating Copper-Atom-Pair Structural Effect inside a Porous Organic Polymer Cavity for Selective Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Chitra Sarkar et al.

Summary: Selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to produce the novel difuranic polyol scaffold 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) has attracted interest. The use of stable and balanced Cu-0 and Cux+ active surface species inside a catechol-based porous organic polymer (POP) nanocage led to the development of a highly efficient Cu@C-POP catalyst for S-HMF hydrogenation, surpassing other reported copper catalysts in catalytic performance.

Rational design and facile hydrothermal-thermal conversion synthesis of hierarchical porous urchin-like Cu2-xSi2O5(OH)3•xH2O and CuO/SiO2 hollow microspheres for high efficiency catalytic reduction of nitroarenes and adsorption of organic dye

Wancheng Zhu et al.

Summary: The hierarchical porous Cu2-xSi2O5(OH)(3)· xH(2)O and CuO/SiO2 composite microspheres, prepared by a hydrothermal method, exhibit excellent catalytic performance and adsorption capacity. The Cu2-xSi2O5(OH)(3)· xH(2)O microspheres with high surface area and large pore volume show superior catalytic activity towards the reduction of nitroarenes.

Zeolite-Encapsulated Cu Nanoparticles for the Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol

Peng Cao et al.

Summary: The study successfully prepared well-defined Cu nanoparticles encapsulated within titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) by an in situ encapsulation approach, showing enhanced activity and selectivity for the selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. The Na-Cu@TS-1 catalyst exhibited high turnover frequency value and effective suppression of metal aggregation and leaching during catalysis due to the confined environment of the zeolite and electronic interaction between encapsulated Cu nanoparticles and Ti species. Na species in the catalyst not only modulate the acid/base property of the zeolite and suppress side reactions, but also facilitate the FFL hydrogenation by inducing an electronic-rich state in the encapsulated Cu species.
