Experimental Investigation of Barium Sources and Fluid-RockInteraction in Unconventional Marcellus Shale Wells Using BaIsotopes

Rebecca M. Matecha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the source of barium in produced waters from Marcellus Shale gas wells and suggests that the release of sulfate from shale pyrite oxidation catalyzes barite precipitation, while dissolution of drilling mud barite is unlikely to be the major source of barium in Marcellus-produced waters.

A Critical Review of the Physicochemical Impacts of Water Chemistry on Shale in Hydraulic Fracturing Systems

Hasan Javed Khan et al.

Summary: In hydraulic fracturing of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, the choice of water chemistry, including produced water, has a significant impact on the transport and geochemical properties of shales. The high salinity fluid used can create both benefits and complications in controlling mechanisms such as shale softening, mineral dissolution, mineral precipitation, fines migration, and wettability alteration.

Assessment of enhanced oil recovery by osmotic pressure in unconventional reservoirs: Application to Niobrara chalk and Codell sandstone

Ozan Uzun et al.

Summary: The traditional waterflooding method is not feasible in shale reservoirs. Osmotic pressure initiated by low-salinity water entering fractures and matrix leads to enhanced oil recovery by counter-current flow of oil from matrix into fractures. Experiments show that using low-salinity water in low-permeability shale cores can improve oil recovery and calculate 'membrane efficiency'.

Contrasting thermally-induced structural and microstructural evolution of alumino-silicates with tubular and planar arrangements: Case study of halloysite and kaolinite

Hassnain Asgar et al.

Summary: Materials with similar chemical structures but different morphological organizations exhibit significant differences in thermally induced chemo-morphological evolution. Recent advancements in multi-scale X-ray scattering measurements allow for non-invasive probing of the structural and microstructural evolution of such materials. This study investigates the chemo-morphological evolution of halloysite compared to kaolinite, identifying distinct stages in the structural evolution and showing differences in pore size, wall thickness, and surface area changes between the two materials.

Characteristics of micro-fracturing in shales induced by dilute acid

Mao Sheng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the generation of microfracturing behaviors in two different types of shale samples using an acid soaking technique. Various experiments, including SEM, XRD, ICP-OES, and XRF, were conducted to analyze the mineral phases and elemental composition. The study contributes to the classification of micro-fracturing features and characteristics in different shale mineralogies.

Clean production technology for effective recovery of vanadium from shale: Interaction between activators and vanadium-loaded minerals

Wang Li et al.

Summary: A pre-decarburization activated roasting and mild acid leaching process was developed for the recovery of vanadium from shale, with NaCO3 and K2SO4 identified as the most effective additives for promoting the production of water-soluble vanadate. The process resulted in a 92% leaching efficiency of vanadium under mild acid conditions and significantly increased the amount of water-soluble vanadium, reducing acid consumption and impurities. Ultimately, V2O5 with purity of 99.5% was obtained after ion exchange, precipitation, and calcination.

The role of supercritical carbon dioxide for recovery of shale gas and sequestration in gas shale reservoirs

Qiao Lyu et al.

Summary: The development of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques has expanded the exploitation of shale gas resources, but potential environmental issues with water usage have prompted research on supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) as an alternative stimulation fluid. SC-CO2 has shown promise in enhancing shale gas recovery and potentially sequestering CO2 in shale reservoirs, thus reducing carbon emissions. Understanding shale-CO2 interactions and the long-term effects of SC-CO2 injection is crucial for the efficiency and environmental impact of this technology.
