Zhenxian Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the Ammonia/Diesel dual direct injection mode of a two-stroke low speed engine was evaluated. It was found that the injection timing of diesel can regulate the engine combustion phase, improving the combustion efficiency and indicated thermal efficiency of ammonia. Furthermore, by optimizing the injection timings of diesel and ammonia, the fuel type NOx emission produced by ammonia combustion can be reduced.

Understanding of combustion characteristics and NO generation process with pure ammonia in the pre-chamber jet-induced ignition system

Xiangyu Meng et al.

Summary: Ammonia has great potential as a hydrogen carrier to achieve carbon neutrality in engines. However, it has limitations in combustion, such as low laminar burning velocity, high ignition energy, and high nitrogen oxide emissions. The pre-chamber jet-induced ignition combustion mode has been found to be an effective way to enhance ignition and improve combustion in the main chamber, especially under lean-burn conditions.

Effect of ammonia energy fractions on combustion stability and engine characteristics of gaseous (ammonia/methane) fuelled spark ignition engine

Caneon Kurien et al.

Summary: The non-carbon nature and higher hydrogen energy density of ammonia have attracted attention as an energy asset and green fuel. This study investigates the effects of ammonia fuel share and engine operating load on the combustion stability and engine characteristics of gaseous (NH3/CH4) fuelled SI engine. The results show that higher ammonia share and lower engine load result in detrimental engine performance and higher combustion variations, while higher operating load improves engine performance and combustion stability. Substituting methane with ammonia can be maximized at higher engine operating loads for clean fuel utilization.

A study on split diesel injection on thermal efficiency and emissions of an ammonia/diesel dual-fuel engine

Amin Yousefi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of split diesel injection strategy on an ammonia/diesel dual-fuel engine under medium load conditions. Results show that the use of split diesel injection strategy increases the thermal efficiency and reduces the unburned ammonia emissions. Two optimized split diesel injection strategies are suggested to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving combustion efficiency, although they result in higher nitrogen oxides emissions.

An experimental and modeling study on auto-ignition kinetics of ammonia/methanol mixtures at intermediate temperature and high pressure

Mengdi Li et al.

Summary: The ignition delay times of NH3/CH3OH mixtures were measured using a rapid compression machine (RCM) under various conditions. The results showed that the reactivity of NH3/CH3OH mixtures increased with methanol addition. Different concentrations of methanol had an impact on the ignition behavior of the fuel. Pressure analysis revealed distinct ignition modes for NH3/CH3OH mixtures, and a detailed ignition mechanism was developed to accurately predict the ignition behavior. The interaction between NH3 and CH3OH played an important role in the auto-ignition process, with methanol addition affecting the concentration of ammonia and oxygen radicals in the fuel and influencing the ignition pathways.

Study of combustion and NO chemical reaction mechanism in ammonia blended with DME

Xiangyu Meng et al.

Summary: This study developed a detailed chemical reaction mechanism and investigated the combustion and emission mechanism for NH3/DME dual-fuel combustion. It was found that fuel NOx still dominates the total NOx production in NH3/DME combustion, and DME addition promotes the NO formation reaction.

Numerical study on laminar burning velocity of ammonia flame with methanol addition

Hao Xu et al.

Summary: The combustion characteristics of ammonia/methanol mixtures were numerically investigated in this study. It was found that methanol has a significant promotive effect on the burning velocity of ammonia. A simplified and reliable mechanism, named 'DNO-NH3', was developed to accurately predict the laminar burning velocities of ammonia/methanol mixtures. The reaction path analysis and NOx emission analysis were also conducted to further understand the combustion process.

An experimental investigation of the performance, emission and combustion stability of compression ignition engine powered by diesel and ammonia solution (NH4OH)

Michal Pyrc et al.

Summary: The study found that co-combustion of water ammonia solution with diesel fuel increased ignition delay period and combustion duration, as well as raised heat release rate. Combustion involving ammonia caused deterioration in engine stability, but did not exceed permissible stability levels. Additionally, the addition of water ammonia solution reduced nitrogen oxide emissions, increased carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions, with no significant changes in carbon dioxide emissions.

An experimental and modeling study of ammonia with enriched oxygen content and ammonia/hydrogen laminar flame speed at elevated pressure and temperature

Krishna Prasad Shrestha et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the laminar flame speeds of ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen blends under different temperature, pressure, and oxygen content conditions, and developed a new kinetic model for predicting the oxidation mechanisms, considering the formation and reduction of nitrogen oxides. The results showed that the laminar flame speed increases with increasing initial temperature, fuel hydrogen content, or oxidizer oxygen content, but decreases with increasing initial pressure. The proposed kinetic model predicts the same trends as experiments and highlights the importance of N2H2 formation under rich conditions.

Ignition delay times of NH3/DME blends at high pressure and low DME fraction: RCM experiments and simulations

Liming Dai et al.

Summary: The autoignition delay times of ammonia/dimethyl ether (NH3/DME) mixtures are significantly affected by the percentage of DME and pressure. The oxidation of DME occurs more rapidly than that of ammonia during the ignition process, leading to the initiation of ammonia oxidation and heat release that accelerates the overall oxidation process towards ignition.
