A detailed study on the micro-explosion of burning iron particles in hot oxidizing environments

Jianqing Huang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the micro-explosion behavior of burning iron particles and observes three distinct micro-explosion modes. The results show that micro-explosions heavily depend on oxygen concentration and result in a decrease in particle surface temperature and an increase in fragment velocity. Additionally, the study discusses potential gas sources in the micro-explosion mechanism.

Puffing/micro-explosion in droplets of rapeseed oil with coal micro-particles and water

D. V. Antonov et al.

Summary: This paper describes the results of experimental investigation and modeling of puffing/micro-explosion in composite droplets of rapeseed oil mixed with coal micro-particles and water. The modeling is based on a previously developed model, which assumes the presence of a spherical water subdroplet in the center of a fuel droplet. The predicted and observed times to puffing/micro-explosion decreased as the ambient gas temperatures and mass fractions of micro-particles in rapeseed oil increased.

Effect of micro-explosion of biodiesel and ethanol droplets on evaporation: A three-stage mixed fuel droplet evaporation model

Kesheng Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evaporation, micro-explosion, and interaction phenomena of a mixed fuel droplet group during heating. Experimental equipment is used to observe the biodiesel and ethanol droplet group with different component proportions. The results show that when the ratio of biodiesel to ethanol is 40:60, the micro-explosion intensity is the highest, and higher micro-explosion intensity leads to higher evaporation rate. A three-stage evaporation model is established, and it is found that the second stage has an average evaporation rate 28 times higher than the first stage and 32 times higher than the third stage.

Time evolution of composite fuel/water droplet radii before the start of puffing/micro-explosion

R. M. Fedorenko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the puffing and micro-explosion processes in composite water/fuel droplets (kerosene, Diesel fuel, and rapeseed oil) through experimental and numerical methods. The experiments were conducted in quiescent air at atmospheric pressure with natural convection. The results show that the time to puffing/micro-explosion decreases with increasing ambient temperature and increases with increasing initial droplet radii for all three fuels. The observed longer time for rapeseed oil droplets compared to the predicted time is attributed to the formation of bubbles, which is not considered in the model used in the analysis.

A new shift mechanism for micro-explosion of water-diesel emulsion droplets at different ambient temperatures

Zhaowen Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evaporation characteristics of water emulsified diesel droplets at different ambient temperatures using droplet suspension technology. The results showed that the evaporation process mainly consisted of three stages and was significantly influenced by the ambient temperature. Additionally, the study proposed a new mechanism of micro-explosion shift by correlating bubble formation and micro-explosion in water emulsified diesel droplets.

Micro-Explosion mechanism of iron hybrid Methane-Air premixed flames

Yueh-Heng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the micro-explosion mechanisms of iron particles in methane-air premixed flames. The experiment shows that the micro-explosion probability of iron particles increases with the particle size and CO plays a critical role in promoting the micro-explosion probability of particles smaller than 50μm. The mechanism of micro-explosion involves oxidizer diffusion, iron oxide production, and the redox reaction of Fe3O4 with CO.

Micro-explosion of a two-component droplet: How the initial temperature of the water core affects the breakup conditions and outcomes

D. V. Antonov et al.

Summary: The study investigates the micro-explosions of two-component fuel droplets (water and rapeseed oil) with varying initial temperatures, showing that a greater difference in initial temperatures leads to shorter delay times. Lowering the initial water temperature to the ice melting point minimizes heating delays before micro-explosion. Decreasing the initial water temperature from 353 to 273 K results in child droplets 80-90% smaller if the relative water concentration in a fuel droplet is less than 30 vol%.

Puffing/micro-explosion of two closely spaced composite droplets in tandem: Experimental results and modelling

D. Antonov et al.

Summary: The lead droplet always puffs/micro-explodes before the downstream droplet, and the difference between their times decreases with increasing distance between the droplets. The puffing/micro-explosion time of both droplets increases with increasing distance between droplets.
