Arushdeep Sidana et al.

Summary: This review discusses the modes of action, advantages and limitations of selective non-conventional pretreatment methods for lignocellulosic biomass. Ultrasound and microwave pretreatment have been extensively studied and shown promising results. However, superficial cost and energy analyses are insufficient to support their transition to industrial scale.

Lignin-enzyme interaction: A roadblock for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosics

Caoxing Huang et al.

Summary: Efficiently producing second-generation biofuels from biomass remains a long-term challenge due to biomass recalcitrance. Lignin significantly contributes to biomass recalcitrance by physically limiting enzyme access to carbohydrates. Research is focused on mitigating the negative effects of lignin on enzyme performance.

Efficient saccharification of wheat straw pretreated by solid particle-assisted ball milling with waste washing liquor recycling

Xiao-le Liu et al.

Summary: The wheat straw was pretreated using ball milling with the assistance of solid particles, such as NaOH, NaCl, and citric acid. Among these particles, NaOH showed the best synergistic effect, leading to a decrease in straw crystallinity and particle size. After enzymatic hydrolysis, the glucose yield increased significantly. The pretreatment washing liquor was also recycled for re-treatment of partially pretreated biomass, resulting in a high glucose yield.

Physicochemical transformation and enzymatic hydrolysis promotion of reed straw after pretreatment with a new deep eutectic solvent

Zhaohui Zhang et al.

Summary: This work proposed a promising biorefinery method using a novel deep eutectic solvent (DES) to deconstruct reed straw. The DES showed significant removal of lignin and xylan while preserving most of the cellulose. Under optimal conditions, the glucose yield from cellulose-rich substrates was significantly higher compared to raw reed straw. The lignin obtained had high purity, medium molecular weight, and low polydispersity. This work provides a theoretical basis for the in-depth utilization of reed straw.

Enhancement of sugar release from sugarcane bagasse through NaOH-catalyzed ethylene glycol pretreatment and water-soluble sulfonated lignin

Baoxian Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the enzymatic digestion of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) using different NaOH-catalyzed ethylene glycol (EG) pretreatments combined with water-soluble sulfonated lignin (SL). The results showed that the one-pot pretreatment of 10%NaOH/EG was more effective than single NaOH or EG pretreatment, or two-step pretreatment. The highest glucose yield was achieved with SCB pretreated with 10%NaOH/EG at 130 C for 60 min and 72 h enzymatic hydrolysis. The addition of SL significantly reduced cellulase dosage and hydrolysis time while maintaining a high glucose yield of 90.4%.
