Dark fermentative hydrogen production from pretreated garden wastes by Escherichia coli

Balasubramani Ramprakash et al.

Summary: The study investigated the conversion of garden wastes into hydrogen using different pretreatment and hydrolysis methods, finding that the optimal conditions for maximum hydrogen production were 2% sulfuric acid and 2% Viscozyme L. The fermentation by Escherichia coli of hydrolyzate from combined acid and enzyme treatment resulted in a 2.7-fold increase in hydrogen production compared to untreated garden wastes.

Assessment of potential biotoxicity induced by biochar-derived dissolved organic matters to biological fermentative H2 production

Ji-wen Wu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) on bio-hydrogen production. The pyrolysis temperature of biochar affected DOM composition, resulting in decreased fermentation performance and hydrogen production. Xylose utilization and microbial biomass accumulation were also negatively affected by DOM. The mechanism of DOM's inhibitory effect was identified as an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a shift in the microbial community. This finding highlights the need for precise design of biochar applications in fermentation systems to improve performance and minimize potential hazards, not limited to hydrogen production.
