Nonlinear mechanical characteristics and damage constitutive model of coal under CO2 adsorption during geological sequestration

Yi Xue et al.

Summary: Geological sequestration of CO2 is important for reducing global warming and achieving carbon neutralization. This study evaluates the effect of CO2 adsorption pressure on the mechanical properties of coal mass using experimental and analytical methods. An elastic damage model is established to describe the nonlinear stress-strain relationship of coal under CO2 adsorption. The results show that increasing adsorption pressure increases the risk of coal damage and fracturing, leading to a more complex fracturing process.

Flow and heat transfer of nitrogen during liquid nitrogen fracturing in coalbed methane reservoirs

Haitao Wen et al.

Summary: This paper simulates the nitrogen flow during LN2 fracturing in a straight fracture and investigates the factors that affect its flow and heat transfer. The results show that the nitrogen at the fracture tip is in a supercritical state and thermal stress has a minor effect on main fracture propagation. Additionally, factors such as fracture aperture, injection velocity, reservoir temperature, injection fluid temperature, fracture propagation pressure, and coal cleat porosity can affect the effectiveness of LN2 fracturing.

Fracture Initiation and Morphology of Tight Sandstone by Liquid Nitrogen Fracturing

Chunyang Hong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of liquid nitrogen (LN2) fracturing on tight sandstone reservoirs and compares it with water fracturing. Lab experiments and CT scanning show that LN2 fracturing can reduce the breakdown pressure by 12.4-51.5% compared with water fracturing. LN2 fracturing also produces volumetric fracturing patterns instead of planar fractures, and has a higher average tortuosity than water fracturing.

Effect of liquid nitrogen cooling on mechanical characteristics and fracture morphology of layer coal under Brazilian splitting test

Peng Hou et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of liquid nitrogen cooling on the internal structure of coal and the mechanical properties and fracture morphology of bedding coal were investigated. The results showed that LN2 cooling damaged the micro-structure of coal and reduced its mechanical properties, with the degree of weakening dependent on the bedding direction. Additionally, LN2 cooling increased the ductility of coal and induced longer and more complex fractures.

Fluid space reformation law of liquid nitrogen fracturing coal based on NMR T1-T2 spectra and inspiration for coalbed methane production

Lei Qin et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the evolution of coal pore and pore fluid occurrence space under the action of liquid nitrogen cold shock. The results show that with the increase of LN2 freezing time and the number of freeze-thaw cycles, the occurrence space of free water in the pores increases significantly, and the occurrence space of irreducible water gradually decreases. This study provides basic support for the quantitative evaluation of the pore structure of LN2 fracturing coal in field applications.

Cryogenic fracturing of synthetic coal specimens under true-triaxial loadings-An experimental study

Xinrui Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of cryogenic fracturing using liquid nitrogen (LN2) for coalbed methane extraction. The results show that pre-cooling improves the fracturing performance of LN2, and water saturation affects the fracture orientation and the formation of thermal cracks around the borehole.

Digital quantification of fracture in full-scale rock using micro-CT images: A fracturing experiment with N2 and CO2

Bing Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that fractures induced by CO2-based fluids have more complex geometry compared to those induced by water and N-2, with more branches and various propagation orientations. Quantitative analysis based on image processing and fracture reconstruction algorithm showed that CO2-based fluids have higher fracture-induced capacity, complexity, and roughness. Among the fluids studied, N-2 had the lowest fracture-induced capacity and produced smoother and more uniform fractures.

Effective fractures and their contribution to the reservoirs in deep tight sandstones in the Kuqa Depression, Tarim Basin, China

Guoping Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effective fractures in deep tight sandstone reservoirs in the Kuqa Depression of the Tarim Basin, and found that tectonic fractures are crucial in these reservoirs, with factors such as filling status, porosity, diagenesis influencing the fracture effectiveness. Effective fractures contribute significantly to the permeability of the reservoir, acting as pathways to improve storage space and determining fluid flow direction.

Experimental study of the effect of liquid nitrogen penetration on damage and fracture characteristics in dry and saturated coals

Zuliang Shao et al.

Summary: The study found that LN2 penetration has a significant impact on the damage of dry coals, but a lesser impact on the damage of saturated coals. Dry samples with LN2 penetration showed significantly increased size and number of micro-fractures, while saturated samples exhibited more severe damage.

Ruiyue Yang et al.

Summary: Multistage hydraulic fracturing is commonly used in tight reservoirs. This study explores the potential of liquid nitrogen (LN2) fracturing as an environmentally friendly alternative, demonstrating lower fracture initiation and propagation pressure compared to water fracturing, along with the generation of highly conductive fractures and thermally induced cracks.
