Assessment and Scientific Progresses in the Analysis of Olfactory Evoked Potentials

Pasquale Arpaia et al.

Summary: The human sense of smell is crucial for many important functions, but there is a lack of objective and non-invasive methods for diagnosing smell disorders. Olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs) have gained increasing attention as a viable tool for objectively assessing olfactory dysfunctions. This review describes the main features of OERPs signals, widely used recording and processing techniques, and the scientific progress and relevance in various application fields.

Decoding olfactory EEG signals for different odor stimuli identification using wavelet-spatial domain feature

Xiao-Nei Zhang et al.

Summary: A new feature named wavelet-spatial domain feature (WSDF) was developed by combining discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and one-versus-rest common spatial pattern (OVR-CSP) for decoding olfactory EEG signals. Experimental results showed superior classification performance of WSDF on two datasets.

Olfactory Virtual Reality: A New Frontier in the Treatment and Prevention of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Rachel S. Herz

Summary: This perspective piece reviews the increasing clinical condition of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to the COVID-19 pandemic and recent research on incorporating olfaction into virtual reality platforms. It then discusses the potential of olfactory virtual reality (OVR) for treating PTSD, suggesting novel ways of implementation and prevention. The article also considers perceptual and chemical features of olfaction that should be taken into account in OVR applications.

Central Nervous System Responses to Comfortable Thermal Stimuli to the Soles of the Feet with Simultaneous Presentation of Other Sensory Stimuli

Seiya Fujiwara et al.

Summary: The study found that applying comfortable thermal stimuli to the soles of the feet while presenting other sensory stimuli can increase alpha-wave activity and decrease cerebral blood flow, significantly affecting the feeling of relaxation.
