Contrasting impacts of warming and browning on periphyton

Isolde Callisto Puts et al.

Summary: We investigated the combined effects of warming and browning on periphyton accrual and pigment composition in 16 experimental ponds. We observed that increased colored dissolved organic matter (cDOM) and associated nutrients, with or without warming, led to a significant increase in periphyton biomass and a comparatively smaller increase in phytoplankton. However, warming weakened the positive impact of browning on periphyton accrual, possibly due to thermal compensation and changes in pigment composition and community composition. Our findings highlight the multiple impacts of climate change on algal growth and the potential implications for ecosystem productivity and food resources in shallow areas of northern lakes.

Stoichiometric mismatch causes a warming-induced regime shift in experimental plankton communities

Sebastian Diehl et al.

Summary: In many ecosystems, consumers and resources may exhibit temporal mismatches in response to warming, leading to differences in seasonal demand and availability. However, the mismatch in food quality is an equally pervasive but less recognized threat to the temporal coherence of consumer-resource interactions.

Landscape determinants of pelagic and benthic primary production in northern lakes

Isolde Callisto Puts et al.

Summary: Global change affects gross primary production in benthic and pelagic habitats of northern lakes by influencing catchment characteristics and lake water biogeochemistry. Changes in key environmental drivers manifest in light limitation of total GPP and the relative size of the benthic habitat. External inputs of inorganic carbon can influence lake productivity patterns independent of terrestrial DOC supply.

Daphnia performance on diets containing different combinations of high-quality algae, heterotrophic bacteria, and allochthonous particulate organic matter

Anja Wenzel et al.

Summary: This study found that the performance of filter-feeding zooplankton is affected when high-quality food is mixed with low-quality food, especially when high-quality food is diluted by low-quality food, resulting in negative impacts on survival, growth, and reproduction of the zooplankton.

An experimental test of climate change effects in northern lakes: Increasing allochthonous organic matter and warming alters autumn primary production

Mohammed Hamdan et al.

Summary: The study found that climate change affects lake GPP mainly through temperature increase and changing cDOM input, with warming increasing GPP and cDOM input decreasing GPP. It is important to consider multiple climate drivers and habitat-specific effects to accurately predict lake GPP responses to climate change.

Warming winters in lakes: Later ice onset promotes consumer overwintering and shapes springtime planktonic food webs

Marie-Pier Hebert et al.

Summary: Research suggests that delaying ice cover onset can impact pelagic food web processes and phenologies, such as increasing algal resource and primary consumer densities in early winter, expanding winter-active consumer populations, and altering nutritional structure after ice-off.

Increasing temperature and productivity change biomass, trophic pyramids and community-level omega-3 fatty acid content in subarctic lake food webs

Ossi Keva et al.

Summary: The study shows that increasing temperature and productivity are leading to a shift in subarctic lake communities towards warmer, murkier-water-adapted organisms and altering the structure of food webs. This shift is negatively impacting the fatty acid content of primary producers and primary consumers, while secondary and tertiary fish consumers are not affected.
