Calculation of Effective Thermal Conductivity for Human Skin Using the Fractal Monte Carlo Method

Guillermo Rojas-Altamirano et al.

Summary: This study determined the effective thermal conductivity (ETC) for living tissues, which directly affects the energy transport process. The tissue was described using fractal scaling and Monte Carlo methods, and improvements in ETC were achieved by considering high tissue porosity, low tortuosity, and shear-thinning fluids.

A Study on the Through-Plane Permeability of Anisotropic Fibrous Porous Material by Fractal Stochastic Method

Yao Xu et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel pore-scale model based on the equilateral triangle representative unit cell (RUC) and capillary bundle model is developed to understand the fluid flow through anisotropic fibrous porous material. The model considers factors such as fiber column size, porosity, and fractal dimensions, and provides an effective through-plane permeability prediction.

Modelling fluid flow in carbon fibre porous media based on X-ray microtomography and lattice Boltzmann method

Yong Li et al.

Summary: In this study, X-ray microtomography and the lattice Boltzmann method were used to investigate the internal structures and fluid flow characteristics of carbon fiber media. The results demonstrated the effects of differential pressure, fluid kinematic viscosity, and boundary conditions on flow velocity, and showed that the use of a fractal model for permeability prediction yielded poor results.

Deep-learning-based porous media microstructure quantitative characterization and reconstruction method

Yubo Huang et al.

Summary: Microstructure characterization and reconstruction plays a crucial role in uncovering the relationship between processing, structure, and properties of porous media behavior in computational materials science. However, existing methods struggle to achieve a balance between quantitative generation and characterization capability and reconstruction quality. This study presents an improved 3D Porous Media Microstructure generative adversarial network that enables high-quality microstructure generation with high controllability and accuracy. The proposed network demonstrates good adaptivity for microstructures with different random geometric configurations and can quantitatively control and predict complex microstructure features.

Three-dimensional reconstruction of porous polymer films from FIB-SEM nanotomography data using random forests

M. Roding et al.

Summary: A segmentation method for FIB-SEM data from ethyl cellulose porous films was developed using scale-space features and a random forest classifier, enabling quantitative characterization and optimization of material structure for controlled release applications. The method, although demonstrated on porous polymer films, can be applied to other soft porous materials imaged by FIB-SEM, providing publicly available data and software to facilitate further development of segmentation methods.

A novel Monte Carlo simulation on gas flow in fractal shale reservoir

Jinghua Yang et al.

Summary: This study predicts the rarefied gas flow through shale reservoir using a fractal probability law and Monte Carlo technique, showing that the apparent gas permeability (AGP) increases with the increment of Knudsen number. Increased pore fractal dimension reduces AGP and intrinsic permeability, but enhances the permeability ratio.

Reconstruction, optimization, and design of heterogeneous materials and media: Basic principles, computational algorithms, and applications

Muhammad Sahimi et al.

Summary: Modeling heterogeneous materials and media through reconstruction is crucial for a wide range of applications. The most fruitful approach involves developing models based on existing data to provide accurate predictions for properties without available data. Stochastic methods are preferred due to the large uncertainty in models and the inability of deterministic approaches to quantify uncertainty effectively.

3D pore space reconstruction using deep residual deconvolution networks

Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: The observation and analyses of natural cores are crucial for oil and gas exploration studies, but the instability and damages to real cores can impact their physical and chemical characteristics. Digital cores offer a solution by digitally capturing and reusing core images or data without harming the real samples. 3D reconstruction of pore space is essential for constructing digital cores, with physical experimental methods being time-consuming and expensive, and numerical reconstruction methods proving to be more cost-effective and efficient.

Reconstructing porous structures from FIB-SEM image data: Optimizing sampling scheme and image processing

Diego Roldan et al.

Summary: The spatial imaging of nano-porous materials using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) involves generating a stack of SEM images that are segmented and reconstructed for structural characterization using advanced algorithms. The influence of the original image's voxel size on estimates of morphological characteristics and effective permeabilities is studied, with a focus on anisotropies due to the FIB-SEM typical anisotropic sampling. Quantitative comparison of morphological descriptors and flow properties of reconstructed data is facilitated by using synthetic FIB-SEM sets with a known ground truth.
