Crowding, climate, and the case for social distancing among trees

Summary: In this study, the researchers examined the interactions between fire, climate, forest spatial structure, and bark beetles using two longitudinal datasets. They found that prefire drought increased mortality risk, but advantageous local neighborhoods could offset these effects. Surprisingly, mortality risk was higher in crowded local neighborhoods that burned in wet years compared to sparse neighborhoods that burned during drought. These results provide insights into the complexities of disturbance dynamics and suggest the potential for managed fire and silvicultural strategies to offset climate effects and enhance resilience to fire, beetles, and drought.
