Silver nanoparticles from residual biomass: Biosynthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity

Pamela Cristine Ladwig Muraro et al.

Summary: The industrial effluent contaminated with organic pollutants has been causing a great environmental impact. In this study, silver nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity were successfully synthesized from Aloe vera. The nanoparticles showed high metal concentration and specific surface area, making them promising for degradation of organic pollutants and treatment of microbial infections.

Pre-oxidation of spent lettuce wash water by continuous Advanced Oxidation Process to reduce chlorine demand and cross-contamination of pathogens during post-harvest washing

Hongran Wang et al.

Summary: The study developed a continuous Photo-Fenton Advanced-Oxidation-Process (AOP) for reducing the chlorine demand of spent lettuce wash water by generating hydroxyl-radicals through UV-C degradation of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of ferric-catalyst. Optimal treatment conditions were identified, leading to reduced chlorine demand and cross-contamination in lettuce batches. Chlorinated byproducts from AOP treated water exhibited higher antimicrobial activity.

Synergistic inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Staphylococcus aureus by gallic acid and thymol and its potential application on fresh-cut tomatoes

Xiaowei Zhang et al.

Summary: The combination of thymol and gallic acid showed synergistic antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Staphylococcus aureus, with a higher efficacy against the latter. This combination also led to changes in bacterial morphology and membrane integrity. Furthermore, the application of this combination on fresh-cut tomatoes demonstrated enhanced microbial inactivation, especially at higher temperatures, making it a potential alternative disinfectant for fresh produce.

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial activity and mechanism of a novel hydrogen peroxide and silver complex in combatting bacteria. The complex was found to effectively kill bacteria by disrupting the cell membrane, reducing intracellular ATP concentration, and inhibiting antioxidase activity.

Hydroxyl-radical activated water for inactivation of Escherichia coli O157: H7, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes on germinating mung beans

Hongran Wang et al.

Summary: The generation of hydroxyl-radical activated water through the use of hydrogen peroxide solution and Fe(III) catalyst in a UV-C reactor is reported. This activated water exhibits antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and enhances the germination of mung beans and sprout yield. However, its effectiveness as a seed disinfection method is limited when used alone.

Summary: Essential oils exhibit strong antimicrobial activity and can be used in food applications to inhibit microbial growth and extend shelf life of fruits. Moderate doses of essential oils can synergize with other additives, maintain fruit firmness, reduce weight loss, but high doses may trigger browning reactions.

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from a meat processing plant

Zbigniew Paluszak et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the contamination levels of L. monocytogenes in a meat processing plant environment and the sensitivity of L. monocytogenes to various antimicrobials. It was found that different disinfectants effectively reduced the growth of L. monocytogenes in planktonic forms and biofilm, with hydrogen peroxide agents showing the highest efficacy against biofilm. Time exposure extension increased bacteria elimination from biofilm for most disinfectants, while the presence of blood reduced the effectiveness of disinfectants at low concentrations.
