An integrated chemical characterization based on FT-NIR, GC-MS and LC-MS for the comparative metabolite profiling of wild and cultivated agarwood

Cheng Yao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical variation between wild and cultivated agarwood using a combination of Fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and ultraperformance liquid chromatography Quadrupole-Exactive Orbitrap tandem mass spectrometry. The analysis identified 76 and 79 metabolites in the wild and cultivated agarwood samples, respectively. Eight key chemical markers were putatively identified to distinguish agarwood from different origins. This research provides a foundation for distinguishing the two ecotypes of agarwood and quality control of this resource.

NIR and MIR spectroscopy for quick detection of the adulteration of cocoa content in chocolates

Ingrid Alves Santos et al.

Summary: The study utilized Near Infrared (NIR) and Mid Infrared (MIR) Spectroscopy with chemometric techniques to accurately determine cocoa solids content in chocolates and detect possible adulterations. The results showed that Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS) could effectively differentiate chocolates with varying cocoa solids concentrations, with high predictive capacity for commercial samples as well. The models identified approximately 14% of commercial samples as potentially adulterated products.

Cleaner and faster method to detect adulteration in cassava starch using Raman spectroscopy and one-class support vector machine

Victor Gustavo Kelis Cardoso et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new method for detecting adulterants in cassava starch using Raman spectroscopy, with the use of one-class models for data treatment showing promising results. Comparisons between OC-SVM and SIMCA were conducted, with OC-SVM outperforming SIMCA in predicting known data samples and detecting adulterations over 2%.

Determination of anthocyanin and moisture content of purple sweet potatoes during drying process by their optical properties in the 400-1050 nm range

Jing Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of using optical properties to assess quality attributes of purple sweet potatoes during the drying process. Good prediction of anthocyanins and moisture contained in PSPs was obtained using their optical properties through SVM models, with determination coefficients of prediction of 0.866-0.917, indicating that optical properties can be used for predicting PSP quality during drying. These results provide a new method for assessing the quality of purple sweet potatoes.

Building robust models for identification of adulteration in olive oil using FT-NIR, PLS-DA and variable selection

Laurence Souza Vieira et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed a model using FT-NIR and PLS-DA to efficiently distinguish the authenticity of extra virgin olive oil and differentiate adulterated samples. Different models showed strong performance in classifying olive oils and various types of adulterants, with high accuracy and specificity values. Reliable and robust models were built allowing for differentiation between seven adulterants and genuine extra virgin olive oils.
