The potential of handheld near infrared spectroscopy to detect food adulteration: Results of a global, multi-instrument inter-laboratory study

Terry F. McGrath et al.

Summary: Fraud in the food supply system will be worsened by shortages caused by climate change and COVID-19, with the dried herbs market representing a complex supply chain attractive to criminals. Real-time remote testing through globally accessible chemometric models on portable near infrared devices can help detect adulteration, with potential for modification to facilitate real-time detection of adulterated samples within the supply chain.

GC-MS-based metabolomics for the detection of adulteration in oregano samples

Stefan Ivanovic et al.

Summary: This study used GC-MS to identify and quantify metabolites in oregano samples adulterated with olive, venetian sumac, and myrtle leaves. The metabolomics profiles obtained were analyzed using multivariate data analysis to reveal markers of adulteration. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis was able to detect oregano adulterations and distinguish between different oregano samples.
