Pesticide residues in food in the European Union: Analysis of notifications in the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed from 2002 to 2020

Paula Kuchheuser et al.

Summary: The EU has strict pesticide policies with Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 setting harmonized maximum residue levels to protect consumers. Notifications in the RASFF related to pesticide residues in food between 2002 and 2020 revealed that most residues come from third countries, particularly in vegetables and fruits. While import controls and border rejections are effective, more measures may be needed for food safety in products originating from EU/EFTA countries.

Anisakis notification in fish: An assessment of the cases reported in the European Union rapid alert system for food and feed (RASFF) database

Andreia Juliana Rodrigues Caldeira et al.

Summary: The presence of Anisakis spp. in fishery products has raised concerns among consumers, highlighting the importance of food safety measures. The significant increase in notifications of Anisakis in recent years underscores the need for standardized parasite detection methods and modern techniques in the fishing and food industries. Consumers play a crucial role in managing the risks associated with Anisakis larvae intake, emphasizing the importance of continued education and awareness.

Analysis of EU Rapid Alert System (RASFF) Notifications for Aflatoxins in Exported US Food and Feed Products for 2010-2019

Ahmad Alshannaq et al.

Summary: The United States is a major exporter of various nuts, but in recent years, border rejections and notifications for U.S. tree nuts and peanuts exported to EU countries have increased due to AF contamination. The main issue lies in AF contamination in foods, especially almonds, peanuts, and pistachios.

Food contact materials recalls and international trade relations: an analysis of the nexus between RASFF notifications and product origin

Federica De Leo et al.

Summary: Food safety is crucial for companies producing and marketing food. This study analyzed notifications related to FCMs in the RASFF database from 2007 to 2019, finding a significant association between the origin of notified products and other variables. Additionally, the effects of EU regulations on Chinese FCMs were evaluated, showing an overall positive impact on notifications of melamine products.

The Intra-European Union Food Trade with the Relation to the Notifications in the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed

Marcin Piglowski

Summary: The research analyzed the food exports from EU countries and potential hazards, focusing on products such as cereals, fruits and vegetables, meat, and dairy. Main notified hazards in food were pathogenic micro-organisms, metals, and foreign bodies, with a significant increase in alert notifications in recent years through RASFF.

Microbiological Hazards in Dry Dog Chews and Feeds

Jagoda Kepinska-Pacelik et al.

Summary: Food-borne infectious agents in pet foods can impact the health of pets and even pose risks for human infection. Despite efforts to produce high-quality pet foods, contamination with bacteria and mycotoxins can still occur in both dry and wet pet foods. The quality and safety of pet foods remain a priority due to the close relationship between humans and animals.

Microbiological hazards associated with food products imported from the Asia-Pacific region based on analysis of the rapid alert system for food and feed (RASFF) notifications

Ayokunle Christopher Dada et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the microbiological safety of foods from the Asia-Pacific region over the past two decades, revealing that foods imported from India and Thailand had the highest number of notifications, with Salmonella being the most predominant pathogen. There was a significant reduction in seafood notifications, while an increase followed by a decrease in notifications for fruits and vegetables was observed.

Yinka M. Somorin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed RASFF notifications to identify common foodborne pathogens in foods from African countries exported to the EU between 1999 and 2019. Salmonella was the predominant pathogen, mostly originating from Eastern Africa, with nuts and seeds being the most important product category contaminated.

The identification of beef crimes and the creation of a bespoke beef crimes risk assessment tool

Kelsey Robson et al.

Summary: This study identified threats in the beef industry related to food fraud and developed a risk assessment tool to evaluate the commercial risk posed by each type of food fraud. The results showed that illegal veterinary drugs and growth promoters presented the highest perceived commercial risk to the beef industry, while fraud related to breed and category of cattle posed the least perceived commercial risk. This research can be utilized to create food fraud prevention and mitigation plans for the beef industry.

Serious Notifications on Food Contact Materials in the EU RASFF

Elias P. Papapanagiotou

Summary: Analysis of serious alert and border rejection notifications on food contact materials (FCM) from the RASFF database revealed China as the main violator, with official controls responsible for most notifications. Differences in lag phase intervals and lack of harmonization in reporting serious alert and border rejection notifications for FCM were observed. The most commonly notified hazards were migration of primary aromatic amines and metals, with a trend of decreasing biannual averages for serious alert notifications for primary aromatic amines and metals, but diverging trends for serious border rejection notifications.
