Impact of Bis-O-dihydroferuloyl-1,4-butanediol Content on the Chemical, Enzymatic and Fungal Degradation Processes of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)

Quentin Carboue et al.

Summary: The degradation potential of polymer blends of PHB containing different percentages of BDF was investigated through chemical, enzymatic, and fungal pathways. Chemical degradation showed that the presence of BDF in the blend was necessary for degradation, with higher BDF content resulting in increased degradation. Enzymatic degradation was not achieved under the tested conditions. Fungal degradation was achieved using a strain isolated from the soil, with higher BDF content leading to higher degradation by the fungus.

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) produced from red grape pomace: Effect of purification processes on structural, thermal and antioxidant properties

Alaitz Etxabide et al.

Summary: Red grape pomace was used to produce poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), which was purified through various processes. The purification steps did not significantly affect the thermal stability of the polymer, but decreased its crystallinity and the presence of amino acids and aromatic compounds. Additionally, the purified PHB powders became whiter and released fewer components into food simulants. The released compounds exhibited antioxidant inhibition, which is a novel finding not previously reported in the literature or with commercially available polyhydroxyalkanoates.

Effect of active phenolic acids on properties of PLA-PHBV blend films

Eva Hernandez Garcia et al.

Summary: Phenolic acids can increase the glass transition temperature of polylactic acid, while poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) undergoes supercooling in films containing protocatechuic acid. Polymer matrices with phenolic acids are stiffer and more resistant to break than polyester blends, and they also have improved oxygen and water vapor barrier capacity, especially in films containing protocatechuic acid. The release rate and ratio of phenolic acids increase with decreased polarity of the food simulant.

Effect of ferulic and cinnamic acids on the functional and antimicrobial properties in thermo-processed PLA films

Ramon Ordonez et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the incorporation of ferulic or cinnamic acids into PLA matrices for food packaging films with antimicrobial properties. The addition of these acids improves the barrier capabilities of the films, but slightly reduces their strength and extensibility. However, limited release of the acids results in no significant antimicrobial activity.

Improved Processability and Antioxidant Behavior of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) in Presence of Ferulic Acid-Based Additives

Lionel F. Longe et al.

Summary: This study used three novel additives based on ferulic acid esterified with different alcohols to improve the mechanical properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). The additive BDF significantly increased the processing window and elongation at break of PHB. The highly thermally stable additive also enhanced the fire-retardant property of the material and exhibited antioxidant properties.

Effect of ferulic and cinnamic acids on the functional and antimicrobial properties in thermo-processed PLA films

Ramon Ordonez et al.

Summary: Incorporating ferulic or cinnamic acids as antimicrobial agents into PLA matrices improved oxygen and water vapor barrier capacities, but did not demonstrate significant antimicrobial activity due to limited release into aqueous culture media. Further studies are needed to enhance compound release into food matrices and antimicrobial effectiveness.

Blending Ferulic Acid Derivatives and Polylactic Acid into Biobased and Transparent Elastomeric Materials with Shape Memory Properties

Antoine Gallos et al.

Summary: Poly-L-lactic acid (PLA) shows potential as a substitute for oil-based polymers due to its sustainability and transparency, but its low flexibility restricts it to rigid plastic applications. Blending with a ferulic acid-derived biobased additive (BDF) creates a new family of transparent elastomeric materials with shape memory, addressing the issue of rigid plastics lacking elastomeric properties.
