Green synthesis of walnut shell hydrochar, its antimicrobial activity and mechanism on some pathogens as a natural sanitizer

Erdal Yabalak et al.

Summary: The hydrochar of waste walnut shells (WSH) showed potential in inhibiting the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and Candida parapsilosis. The study found that the inhibition was the highest for C. parapsilosis and the lowest for C. albicans. After exposure to WSH, there was an increase in leakage of proteins, DNA, and potassium ions from the microorganisms.

Chicken feather hydrochar incorporated with phenolic extract of Rosa damascena Mill. to enlarge the antibacterial performance against Acinobacter baumannii and Staphylococcus aureus

Elif Ayse Erdogan Eliuz et al.

Summary: In this study, the antibacterial activity of an aqueous extract of Rosa damascene (RAE) on Acinobacter baumannii and Staphylococcus aureus was enhanced by incorporating it into chicken feather hydrochar (CFH). The CFH alone showed good bacterial adsorption capacity, and the CFH*RAE demonstrated significantly higher inhibition zones against the pathogens. The time-dependent inhibitions on the artificial skin surface were also calculated for the first time. The findings suggest that CFH*RAE can be considered for the treatment of skin disorders caused by A. baumannii and S. aureus.

CoS2/MoS2 Nanosheets with Enzymatic and Photocatalytic Properties for Bacterial Sterilization

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: The use of enzymatic and photocatalytic coupling catalysts to achieve significant antibacterial performance has been achieved by tailoring the composition and energy levels of Co-Mo-S mixed metal sulfides derived from metal organic framework (MOF) precursors. The vulcanized CoS2/MoS2 nanosheets exhibit excellent enzymatic properties and can degrade various pollutants in a neutral environment. The collaboration of enzymatic and photocatalytic catalysis has led to the development of multifunctional materials with significant applications in biotechnology and biomedicine.

A photothermal and self-induced Fenton dual-modal antibacterial platform for synergistic enhanced bacterial elimination

Xianghong Xie et al.

Summary: The synergistic antibacterial strategy presented in this study utilizes copper peroxide and tungsten disulfide nanoflowers to activate the Fenton reaction under acidic conditions and eliminate bacteria by transforming light into localized heat under near-infrared laser irradiation. This system has shown significant antibacterial effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting its potential for rational design of synergistic antibacterial systems.

High-efficiency degradation of quinclorac via peroxymonosulfate activated by N-doped CoFe2O4/Fe0@CEDTA hybrid catalyst

Lezhu Su et al.

Summary: A novel N-doped carbon support CoFe2O4/Fe-0 hybrid catalyst was in situ formed by coprecipitation and calcination process, which showed high catalytic performance in degrading persistent organic pollutants like Quinclorac. The Fe-0 could activate peroxymonosulfate and reduce Co3+ synergistically, while the N-doped porous carbon strengthened electron transfer for pollutant degradation. High degradation efficiency was achieved in the system with good magnetic recovery properties, making it an ideal catalyst for organic pollutants removal.

Biochar catalyzed dechlorination-Which biochar properties matter?

Jing Ai et al.

Summary: The study found that bone and shrimp-based biochars showed the highest catalytic activity for TCE reduction, while graphite and activated carbon showed no reactivity. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that the catalytic activity of biochar is controlled by multiple properties, including surface area, TCE sorption, abundance of C-O groups, and pore size.

Nitrogen-doped lignin-derived biochar with enriched loading of CeO2 nanoparticles for highly efficient and rapid phosphate capture

Gao-Jie Jiao et al.

Summary: Development of lignin-derived carbon adsorbents with ultrahigh phosphate adsorption activity and rapid adsorption kinetics is of great importance, and a novel CeO2 functionalized N-doped lignin-derived biochar (Ce@NLC) was developed via a cooperative modification strategy for effective and fast phosphate capture. The Ce@NLC showed enhanced phosphate capture capacity and extremely rapid adsorption kinetics in a wide operating pH range, demonstrating strong phosphate adsorption activity even in low-concentration phosphorus-containing water.
