Bioherbicidal Activity and Metabolic Profiling of Allelopathic Metabolites of Three Cassia species using UPLC-qTOF-MS/MS and Molecular Networking

Asmaa M. Otify et al.

Summary: This study found that extracts from several Cassia plants have allelopathic activity, inhibiting weed germination and growth. The extracts were found to contain various compounds, such as flavonoids, coumarins, anthraquinones, phenolic acids, lipids, and fatty acid derivatives. Further evaluation of the potential of Cassia extracts as allelopathic compounds in agricultural systems is therefore recommended.

Hedypnois cretica L. and Urospermum picroides L. Plant Growth, Nutrient Status and Quality Characteristics under Salinity Stress

Alexios A. Alexopoulos et al.

Summary: This study tested the effect of salinity on plant growth, nutritional composition, and quality features of Hedypnois cretica and Urospermum picroides. The results showed that high salinity severely decreased the fresh yield and mineral profile of leaves and roots of both species. However, leaf pigments and total phenolic compounds content were not significantly affected by salinity. Total soluble solids and titratable acidity increased with increasing salinity in most cases, while free proline content increased and nitrates' content decreased. It was concluded that tailor-made nutrient solutions could allow the cultivation of tolerant species with low-quality irrigation water.

Leaf-surface guaianolides from Amphoricarpos neumaeyri showing protective effect on human lymphocytes DNA

Mirjana Cvetkovic et al.

Summary: Analysis of CH2Cl2 surface extract from leaves of Amphoricarpos neumayeri Vis. revealed 16 sesquiterpene lactones with guaianolide skeleton, known as amphoricarpolides. Four new derivatives were identified through detailed IR, NMR, and MS analyses. These compounds showed a beneficial effect in reducing DNA damage in human lymphocytes.

Comparative studies of urolithins and their phase II metabolites on macrophage and neutrophil functions

Aneta Bobowska et al.

Summary: Comparative studies were conducted on the effects of urolithin A, iso-urolithin A, and urolithin B, as well as their glucuronides, on processes associated with the inflammatory response. Urolithin A was found to be the most active metabolite in inhibiting the inflammatory response, while the glucuronide conjugates were not effective in this regard. Phase II metabolism was shown to diminish the pharmacological properties of urolithins.

Smooth Golden Fleece and Prickly Golden Fleece as Potential New Vegetables for the Ready-to-Eat Production Chain

Matteo Anaclerio et al.

Summary: The study found that both golden fleece species are suitable for cultivation, with prickly golden fleece having higher total phenols and total antioxidant activity. At low sowing density, smooth golden fleece had higher nitrate content compared to high-density plants and prickly golden fleece.
