Extendedtight-bindingquantum chemistry methods

Christoph Bannwarth et al.

Summary: This review discusses a family of atomistic, mostly quantum chemistry based semiempirical methods for describing large molecules in gas and condensed phase. These methods are derived from a density functional perturbation expansion and emphasize parameter availability for almost the entire periodic table, with improvements in atomic orbital basis set and interaction treatments. The methods are consistent with accurate gas phase theoretical reference data and have been extended for electronic spectra and response properties.

Harnessing molecular recognition for localized drug delivery

Renjie Liu et al.

Summary: A major challenge in drug delivery is to provide the right dose, at the right location, for the right duration to maximize therapeutic efficacy while minimizing side effects. Two general modalities for localized drug delivery are targeted accumulation and local anchoring, which involve molecular recognition between various biomolecules to achieve drug accumulation and retention.

A Step toward the Quantification of Noncovalent Interactions in Large Biological Systems: The Independent Gradient Model-Extremely Localized Molecular Orbital Approach

Erna K. Wieduwilt et al.

Summary: The independent gradient model (IGM) combined with extremely localized molecular orbitals (ELMOs) libraries can accurately detect and quantify covalent and noncovalent interactions. Validation tests on large molecular systems show that the IGM-ELMO strategy provides results closer to quantum mechanical ones with low computational cost, making it suitable for unraveling complex noncovalent interaction networks or designing new drugs.

Preparation of sodium hyaluronate/dopamine/AgNPs hydrogel based on the natural eutetic solvent as an antibaterial wound dressing

Wen Li et al.

Summary: Based on previous research, the natural deep eutectic solvent (DES) shows potential for fabricating hydrogel wound dressing due to its outstanding properties. In this study, a novel hydrogel wound dressing, DES-DASH@Ag, was developed using SH and DES, which demonstrated good cytocompatibility and antibacterial effect. The hydrogel also promoted skin tissue regeneration in mouse wound areas, suggesting its promise as a wound dressing in modern medicine.

Membrane Interactions of Virus-like Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Sara Malekkhaiat Haffner et al.

Summary: The study showed that the topography of nanoparticles strongly influences their interaction with bacteria-mimicking lipid bilayers, especially in the presence of antimicrobial peptides. Virus-like mesoporous nanoparticles exhibit a more pronounced membrane disruption after loading with LL-37 compared to smooth nanoparticles.

Rapid screening of apple juice quality using ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics: A comparative study

Katarzyna Wlodarska et al.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the potential of different optical spectroscopic techniques for quality assessment of apple juices. Calibration models based on NIR spectra of fruit showed high predictive ability for certain quality parameters, while models based on juice spectra performed best for others. The results provide insights for the development of fast quality control methods for juices.
