Osmoporation is a versatile technique to encapsulate fisetin using the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus

Eduardo Wagner Vasconcelos de Andrade et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of Lactobacillus acidophilus cells as an encapsulating carrier for fisetin using osmoporation. The results showed that osmotic pressure and initial fisetin concentration affected the performance of the osmoporation process. Encapsulated fisetin showed increased melting point and enhanced bioaccessibility. Furthermore, the osmoporated biocapsules efficiently protected and preserved fisetin during simulated digestion. This study demonstrated that osmoporation using probiotic L. acidophilus is a simple and efficient technique to encapsulate and deliver fisetin for food applications.

Comparing pH differential and methanol-based methods for anthocyanin assessments of strawberries

Toktam Taghavi et al.

Summary: Anthocyanins are water-soluble polyphenolic pigments found in flowers, vegetables, and fruits, playing critical roles in plant and human health. Spectrophotometric methods are simple and inexpensive ways to quantify anthocyanins in plant tissues, but need to be optimized for different plant materials with the choice between organic solvent-based or pH differential methods.

Metallo-13-lactamases inhibitor fisetin attenuates meropenem resistance in NDM-1-producing Escherichia coli

Yan Guo et al.

Summary: This study identifies fisetin as an effective inhibitor of NDM-1, reducing bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Combining fisetin with meropenem significantly attenuates resistance and shows synergistic effects in vitro and in vivo. Molecular simulations reveal the mechanism of fisetin's inhibitory activity on NDM-1. Fisetin represents a promising strategy for combating carbapenem-resistant bacterial infections.

Microbial pullulan for food, biomedicine, cosmetic, and water treatment: a review

Subbulakshmi Muthusamy et al.

Summary: Most fossil fuel-derived polymers used for food packaging are non-biodegradable and cause pollution by microplastics. Pullulan, a unique biopolymer produced by microbial fermentation of agro-residues, is reviewed here for its production and applications. Chemically modified pullulan is widely used in food, pharmaceuticals, biomedical, and cosmetics, and it exhibits significantly higher tensile strength and bioadhesion time compared to conventional polymers.

Effect of water kefir grain biomass on chitosan film properties

Carolina Oliveira Marinho et al.

Summary: Water kefir grains (WKG) were found to have an impact on the properties of chitosan (CS) films, affecting their crystallinity, tensile strength, elongation at break, and water vapor permeability. Among the formulations, the addition of 20% WKG showed the most satisfactory performance.

Development and characterization of levan/pullulan/chitosan edible films enriched with ?-polylysine for active food packaging

Longzhan Gan et al.

Summary: The levan/pullulan/chitosan edible films enriched with epsilon-polylysine were successfully fabricated and evaluated for their applicability in food packaging. The films showed decreased water solubility and oxygen permeability, increased elongation at break, strong inhibitory effect on food-borne pathogens, and good biodegradability. When used as coatings on strawberries, the films improved storage stability. Overall, these findings suggest that the developed edible films have potential for sustainable active food packaging.

Application of ABA and GA3 alleviated browning of litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) via different strategies

Shanshan Qu et al.

Summary: The study found that ABA and GA3 treatment can reduce browning of harvested litchi fruit and maintain higher anthocyanin content, but they have different effects on fruit metabolism pathways. ABA mainly alleviates browning by promoting anthocyanin synthesis, while GA3 inhibits anthocyanin degradation.

A Gas-Permeation Controllable Packaging Membrane with Porous Microspheres as Gas Switches for Efficient Preservation of Litchi

Jinju Ma et al.

Summary: Food wastage caused by the deterioration of perishable food like fruits and vegetables is a serious global issue with high ethical, financial, and environmental costs. Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is a promising method to extend shelf life and maintain quality, with the study showing that the use of a plant leaf-mimetic shellac-based membrane embedded with chitosan porous microspheres loaded with antimicrobial tannic acid can regulate CO2 and O-2 permeability and selectivity. The addition of varying amounts of TA-CPM in the hybrid membranes had significant effects on litchi preservation at room temperature.
