The Effect of Dichloromethane on Product Separation during Continuous Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Chlorella vulgaris and Aqueous Product Recycling for Algae Cultivation

Bingfeng Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that using DCM in the continuous HTL process can increase the biocrude yield, with 350 degrees Celsius being the optimal operating temperature. The AP contains more nitrogen and other ions, which is advantageous for nutrient recovery. AP treated with activated carbon absorption purification can enhance algae growth.

Antimicrobial activity of sophorolipids produced by Starmerella bombicola against phytopathogens from cherry tomato

Talita de O. Caretta et al.

Summary: Results showed that sophorolipids inhibited the mycelial growth in vitro at a minimum concentration of 2 mg mL(-1). Applying sophorolipids at 1, 2, and 4 mg mL(-1) on tomato leaves before inoculation of B. cinerea was the most effective treatment, reducing leaf necrosis by up to 76.90%. Washing tomato fruits with sophorolipids before inoculation of B. cinerea could inhibit gray mold development by up to 96.27%.

Valorisation of harmful algae bloom (Enteromorpha prolifera) for polysaccharide and crude bio-oil production

Yijing Wu et al.

Summary: This study extracted water-soluble polysaccharide from excessive growth of Enteromorpha prolifera (EP) and utilized residual EP to generate crude bio-oil using hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). The study found optimal conditions for polysaccharide extraction and successfully co-liquefied residual EP with microalgae. The valorisation route developed in this study is important for full utilization of EP and improving its economic viability and sustainability.

Experimental exploration of processes for deriving multiple products from spent coffee grounds

Shiqi Zhang et al.

Summary: Valorizing spent coffee grounds through hydrothermal liquefaction has potential for biocrude production. Extracting high-value polyphenols and polysaccharides under optimal conditions yields desirable results, and ultrasound-assisted extraction can impact feedstock composition. A temperature of 295 degrees C is found to be the most favorable for hydrothermal liquefaction.

A review on key design and operational parameters to optimize and develop hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass for biorefinery applications

Ibrahim Alper Basar et al.

Summary: The increase in environmental awareness has led to a shift towards renewable energy sources and waste valorization technologies. Among these, biomass conversion and biofuels, especially through hydrothermal liquefaction, have gained significant attention for their potential in existing infrastructure. However, there are still gaps in optimization, reactor design, and catalyst effects that require further exploration. This review summarizes the current state and importance of hydrothermal liquefaction, providing a reference point for future research in the field.
