Antioxidant Film Based on Chitosan and Tulsi Essential Oil for Food Packaging

Himanshu Kumar et al.

Summary: In this study, a chitosan film incorporated with tulsi essential oil (TEO) was developed as an antioxidant packaging film. The film exhibited improved mechanical properties and antioxidant activity compared to neat chitosan film. The inclusion of TEO also resulted in reduced moisture content and improved water barrier properties. The active chitosan packaging showed better antioxidant activity in preserving the quality of fried potato fingers.

Development of Antimicrobial Active Food Packaging Film Based on Gelatin/Dialdehyde Quince Seed Gum Incorporated with Apple Peel Polyphenols

Leila Yavari Maroufi et al.

Summary: Gelatin films crosslinked with dialdehyde quince seed gum (Gel/DAQSG) were prepared with different blending ratios by solution casting technique. The addition of DAQSG into the matrix of Gel films led to the chemical crosslinking between the amine groups of Gel and aldehyde groups of DAQSG. With the increase of DAQSG content, the number of crosslinked networks increased, causing the structure of Gel/DAQSG films to become denser and more compact. The Gel/DAQSG film with a ratio of 1:2 exhibited better water solubility, water vapor permeability, and tensile stress compared to pure Gel film. Additionally, the optimal film containing apple peel extract (APE) displayed high antioxidant activity and improved antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus.

Xiaoqian Diao et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface of calcium carbonate was modified using polyethylene glycol 600 (PEG-600) as a coating agent to improve the mechanical and degradation properties of PBAT films. The addition of PEG-600 improved the compatibility between the polymer matrix and the filler, and also facilitated the degradation of PBAT. These findings are of great significance for the development of high-performance PBAT/calcium carbonate films.

Degradation Mode of PBAT Mulching Film and Control Methods During its Degradation Induction Period

Runmeng Qiao et al.

Summary: Plastic films are important in China's agricultural production, but their extensive use has caused serious pollution. The search for biodegradable alternatives has gained attention. However, currently available degradable materials do not meet all crop requirements. This paper reviews the properties, degradation process, and methods to delay degradation of PBAT, providing a theoretical basis for the development of biodegradable films with controllable degradation cycles.

Super Tough Polylactic Acid Plasticized with Epoxidized Soybean Oil Methyl Ester for Flexible Food Packaging

Arkadiusz Zych et al.

Summary: The research team developed flexible PLA materials by plasticizing them with renewable and biodegradable epoxidized soybean oil methyl ester, achieving elongations at break of nearly 800%. The lubricating effect of the plasticizer allowed for more sustainable extrusion at a low temperature of 140 degrees C, preventing PLA degradation and saving energy in the process. Plasticized films also produced less acoustic noise during handling, which is important for food packaging applications.

Burcu Gokkaya Erdem et al.

Summary: The study aimed to discuss the relationship between water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and moisture sorption isotherms (MSIs) of whey protein, soy protein isolate, and carboxymethyl cellulose films, revealing the differences in permeability, diffusivity, and solubility properties among the studied films. Results showed that CMC films had the highest WVTR due to their high water vapor adsorption capacity, leading to the lowest diffusivity, while films with the highest solubility exhibited the lowest diffusivity.

Field test on the biodegradation of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) based mulch films in soil

Ruimin Qi et al.

Summary: The use of plastic films in agriculture is important for food production, but concerns about plastic residues accumulating in soil and entering the food chain have led to the development of biodegradable films. Research shows that slight variations in the formulations of commercial biodegradable mulch films can lead to very different persistence rates in soil, ultimately resulting in their progressive accumulation if used repeatedly.
