New Amphiphilic Ionic Liquids for the Demulsification of Water-in-Heavy Crude Oil Emulsion

Mahmood M. S. Abdullah et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the synthesis of two new amphiphilic ionic liquids (AILs) using abietic acid (AA) as a precursor and their application as efficient demulsifiers for water-in-crude oil (W/O) emulsions. The AILs showed promising results in demulsifying W/O emulsions in different crude oil: brine ratios.

Synthesis, characterization, and application of two new ionic liquids for the dehydration of heavy crude oil emulsions

Noorah A. Faqihi et al.

Summary: This work aims to synthesize two new ionic liquids (ILs) using dodecylamine (DA) and epichlorohydrin (EH), followed by the reaction with either diethylenetriamine (DT) or tetraethylenepentamine (TP). The synthesized ILs were evaluated for their chemical structures, thermal stability, surface and interfacial tensions, and relative solubility number (RSN). It was found that DATP-IL showed higher dehydration efficiency for water-in-heavy crude oil (W/O) emulsions.

Evaluation of the efficiency of ionic liquids in the demulsification of oil-in-water emulsions

Wamda Faisal Elmobarak et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the efficiency of three ionic liquids as demulsifiers for the recovery of oil from O/W-EMUL. Results show that halogenide ionic liquids can achieve a higher demulsification efficiency compared to non-halogenide ILs. The ion exchange mechanism between ILs and oil-surfactant interface can enhance the efficiency of oil-water separation.

Demulsification of water-in-crude oil emulsion using natural lotus leaf treated via a simple hydrothermal process

Fan Ye et al.

Summary: Efficient, environmentally-friendly, and low-cost demulsifiers for the separation of oil?water emulsion are actively sought after in the oil industry. The use of natural lotus leaf to prepare a HLLF demulsifier has successfully achieved a demulsification efficiency of up to 88.17% for water-in-crude oil emulsions. The micro-nano structure of HLLF contributes to its outstanding demulsification ability, showing promising application prospects in the oil industry.

Evaluation of triethanolamine-cashew nutshell liquid derivatives as crude oil emulsion breakers

C. O. Victor-Oji et al.

Summary: Three bio-based crude oil emulsion breakers were prepared from agricultural waste by chemical treatment of cashew nutshell liquid extract with triethanolamine. The effectiveness of these emulsion breakers in demulsification process was investigated experimentally, showing different performances under various conditions. The study suggests that butanol could be a sustainable solvent substitute for xylene in demulsifier formulations.
