Loureirin C and Xanthoceraside Prevent Abnormal Behaviors Associated with Downregulation of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor and AKT/mTOR/CREB Signaling in the Prefrontal Cortex Induced by Chronic Corticosterone Exposure in Mice

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Lou C and Xan attenuate abnormal behaviors induced by chronic corticosterone administration by increasing BDNF expression and phosphorylation of Akt, mTOR, and CREB, making them attractive candidates for the treatment of depressive disorders.

Loureirin C ameliorates ischemia and reperfusion injury in rats by inhibiting the activation of the TLR4/NF-κB pathway and promoting TLR4 degradation

Jikai Xu et al.

Summary: Ischemic stroke is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. This study found that loureirin C, an active compound from Chinese Dragon's blood, can alleviate brain damage caused by ischemic stroke by inhibiting microglial activation. This effect may be achieved through Triad3A-mediated ubiquitination and degradation of TLR4.

Estrogen receptors and the aging brain

Silvia Maioli et al.

Summary: Estrogen, the female sex hormone, plays a crucial role in neuroprotection in the brain by binding to estrogen receptors and regulating neural differentiation, proliferation, inflammation, metabolism, synaptic plasticity, and behavior. As circulating sex hormones decrease with age, especially during menopause in women, the decline may affect neuroprotection and resilience in the aging brain, as well as contribute to sex differences observed in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Understanding the spatiotemporal signaling of sex hormones in the brain can lead to more personalized strategies for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases.

Dao-Ran Pang et al.

Summary: In this study, four new chalchonoid trimers, along with a pair of known enantiomers, were isolated from Chinese dragon's blood and their structures were elucidated using spectroscopic analysis. Compound 1 showed significant inhibition of nitric oxide production in BV-2 microglial cells.

Sex differences in Alzheimer's disease: metabolic reprogramming and therapeutic intervention

Lloyd A. Demetrius et al.

Summary: Studies on sporadic Alzheimer's disease have identified three classes of risk factors: age, genetics, and sex. The Metabolic Reprogramming (MR) Theory suggests that AD originates from a metabolic dysregulation, with adaptive alterations in cerebral metabolism leading to a hypermetabolic phase, prolonged prodromal phase, and metabolic collapse. This theory is used to explain the impact of hormonal changes on the development of AD in women, proposing sex-specific diagnostic programs and therapeutic strategies.
