Increasing the uptake of multispecies models in fisheries management

Melissa A. Karp et al.

Summary: Multispecies models have been around in fisheries since the 1970s, but their operational use in fishery management is limited. This is surprising given the inherent multispecies nature of species and fleet interactions and the push for ecosystem-based fisheries management. We provide recommendations to address the impediments to the regular operational use of multispecies models.

Non-stationary Natural Mortality Influencing the Stock Assessment of Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua) in a Changing Gulf of Maine

Ning Chen et al.

Summary: Climate change impacts fish populations and their dynamics, and it is crucial to consider non-stationary vital rates in fishery stock assessment and management. This study focused on the effects of non-stationary natural mortality on the stock assessment of Atlantic cod in the Gulf of Maine. The results showed that adopting non-stationary mortality rates improved the accuracy of stock assessment compared to the commonly used stationary assumption.

Spatiotemporal variation in fishing patterns and fishing pressure in Lake Victoria (East Africa) in relation to balanced harvest

Vianny Natugonza et al.

Summary: Balanced harvest (BH) is the application of moderate fishing pressure across different species, trophic levels, stocks, or sizes in an ecosystem, aiming to achieve higher fish yield with minimal changes to ecosystem structure and function. This study investigated the fishing patterns in Lake Victoria, Africa's second largest inland fishery, and found that it has been consistent with BH until recently. However, overexploitation was observed for certain species, and there were contrasting effects on body size for Nile perch and Nile tilapia. Moving towards BH in Lake Victoria and other inland fisheries will require a paradigm shift in thinking and regulations.

Towards ecosystem modeling in the deep sea: A review of past efforts and primer for the future

Matthew S. Woodstock et al.

Summary: Ecosystem modeling is a crucial technique that is used to study the interactions of different components within a simulation. However, deep-sea ecosystems have not received the same level of modeling effort as nearshore systems, despite facing similar anthropogenic stressors. A review of literature revealed an increasing number of publications on deep-sea modeling since 2000, but only a small percentage explicitly included deep-sea ecosystems as a focal point. The lack of data on life history and limitations in existing frameworks hinder current modeling efforts.

Time-varying predation as a modifier of constant natural mortality for Gulf of Alaska walleye pollock

Martin W. Dorn et al.

Summary: Predation, although highly variable, remains the greatest source of mortality for juvenile and lower trophic-level fishes, with substantial and long-term effects on prey dynamics. By estimating time-varying predation mortality, the study aims to understand its effects on the population dynamics of pollock in a system dominated by upper trophic-level predators.

Shifting baselines and deciding on the desirable form of multispecies maximum sustainable yield

E. A. Fulton et al.

Summary: Multispecies, multigear fisheries are common in most ecosystems, especially in tropical ecosystems and emerging economies. However, fishery science has mostly focused on single-species perspectives, ignoring the trophic link among species and the technical interaction between gears. This disconnects management objectives from the context of the ecosystem or socioecological system. This paper demonstrates how aggregate production models can estimate system-level fishery reference points for multispecies fisheries, and highlights the importance of considering ecosystem state and management objectives for sustainability.

Combining Ecosystem and Single-Species Modeling to Provide Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management Advice Within Current Management Systems

Daniel Howell et al.

Summary: This study presents two case studies that offer practical progress in Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) by combining ecosystem modeling with single-species assessment models. To EBFM or not to EBFM? that is not the question

Mandy Karnauskas et al.

Summary: The EBFM framework has solid theoretical justification but faces challenges in systematic implementation. Strong governance regions have successfully managed single-species stocks, but a limited set of management objectives can lead to inefficiencies and unintended consequences. Emphasizing human values, identifying system-level objectives, and transparently evaluating management actions can lead to reduced conflict and improved stakeholder support for governance. Increased attention to ecosystem objectives and trade-offs can enhance management outcomes.
