An L-rhamnose-binding lectin from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) possesses agglutination activity and regulates inflammation, phagocytosis and respiratory burst of monocytes/macrophages

Liangliang Mu et al.

Summary: In this study, an L-rhamnose-binding lectin-like (OnRBL-L) was identified and characterized from Nile tilapia. The results suggest that OnRBL-L may play a significant role in non-specific cellular immune defense.

The impact of oral ciprofloxacin on the structure and functions of rat gastric mucosa

Nihal A. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of ciprofloxacin on gastric cell lines in rats, with a focus on physiological, histopathological, and bacteriological changes. The results showed that prolonged oral administration of ciprofloxacin altered the gastric mucosal architecture and bacteriology in albino rats. The treated rats exhibited significantly positive tumor necrosis factor and a significant reduction in serum levels of H. pylori antibodies.

Bone Marrow Harbors a Unique Population of Dendritic Cells with the Potential to Boost Neutrophil Formation upon Exposure to Fungal Antigen

Marieke Goedhart et al.

Summary: Apart from controlling hematopoiesis, the bone marrow also functions as a secondary lymphoid organ. Bone marrow-resident dendritic cells (DCs) are mainly localized around sinusoids and can present antigens. They belong to the cDC2 subtype and are associated with Th2/Th17 immunity. These DCs express several c-type lectins, including Dectin-1, which can bind fungal beta-glucans. Compared to spleen DCs, bone marrow DCs are more efficient in phagocytosing yeast particles and Aspergillus conidia, and this is dependent on Dectin-1. Additionally, zymosan-stimulated bone marrow DCs enhance neutrophil differentiation and maintenance of progenitor cells.

Fish-specific Toll-like receptor 14 (TLR14) from Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus) is involved in immune response to bacterial infection

Rongrong Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a fish-specific TLR14, MaTLR14, was identified and characterized from Monopterus albus. MaTLR14 plays a critical role in innate immune responses against pathogens. It mainly located in intestinal epithelial cells and can bind to various bacteria and cause agglutination. Further studies showed that MaTLR14 can activate immune responses through MyD88 adaptor and related signaling pathways.

Galectin, another lectin from Fenneropenaeus merguiensis, contributed in shrimp immune defense

Rachanida Praparatana et al.

Summary: FmGal, a galectin from Fenneropenaeus merguiensis, participates in shrimp immune response and is up-regulated upon infection with pathogens. It exhibits specific sugar specificity and enhances the phagocytosis and encapsulation ability of shrimp hemocytes towards pathogens.

A C-type lectin containing two carbohydrate recognition domains participates in the antibacterial response by regulating the JNK pathway and promoting phagocytosis

Hong -Ye Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the antimicrobial mechanism of a C-type lectin (CTL) containing two carbohydrate recognition domains (DClec). It is found that DClec regulates the JNK signaling pathway and adjusts antimicrobial peptide (AMP) expression to eliminate pathogens. It is also observed that DClec is secreted into the hemolymph and binds to bacteria, promoting their elimination. The findings suggest that DClec plays an important role in the immune response of crustaceans.

A rhamnose-binding lectin from Rhodnius prolixus and the impact of its silencing on gut bacterial microbiota and Trypanosoma cruzi

C. A. C. Araujo et al.

Summary: The research describes a rhamnose-binding lectin (RBL) from Rhodnius prolixus, highlighting its potential importance in the immune response and gut microbiota homeostasis of the insect vector. Silencing of RpLec gene led to increased bacterial populations in the midgut of R. prolixus, indicating a role in regulating gut bacteria and immune defenses.

F-type lectin from serum of the Antarctic teleost fish Trematomus bernacchii (Boulenger, 1902): Purification, structural characterization, and bacterial agglutinating activity

Mariano Dara et al.

Summary: The study isolated a Ca++-independent fucose-binding protein from the serum of Antarctic fish Trematomus bernacchii and characterized its carbohydrate binding properties, thermal stability, and potential ability to recognize bacterial pathogens. Results showed that the protein is a bona fide member of the FTL family, with binding activity at low temperatures and the ability to agglutinate bacteria, suggesting its involvement in host-pathogen interactions in cold environments.
