A multi-point constraint unfitted finite element method

Brubeck Lee Freeman

Summary: In this work, a multi-point constraint unfitted finite element method is proposed for solving the Poisson equation. The method enforces essential boundary and interface conditions strongly, and achieves stability through the use of multi-point constraints on ghost nodes. Another key advantage is the reduction of degrees of freedom associated with ghost nodes, allowing the method to capture strong and weak discontinuities without additional degrees of freedom. It also does not require penalty parameters and can handle discontinuities using standard finite element functions.

XFEM with partial Heaviside function enrichment for fracture analysis

Y. Jiang et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel extended finite element method with partial Heaviside function enrichment (XFEM-P) is proposed for fracture analysis. This method divides the crack tip element into cracked and uncracked domains naturally by the crack geometry, utilizing Heaviside function enrichment in the cracked domain and standard finite element method displacement in the uncracked domain. The XFEM-P shows better accuracy in computed results, numerical properties like convergence rate and condition number, compared to XFEM with only Heaviside function enrichment (XFEM-H).

An XFEM multilayered heaviside enrichment for fracture propagation with reduced enhanced degrees of freedom

Milad Bybordiani et al.

Summary: The advanced numerical techniques of XFEM/GFEM provide accurate prediction of material failure by independently enriching a few elements in a multilayered approach, allowing for condensed degrees of freedom at the layer level to maintain system dimensions, sparsity, and bandness. This approach enhances accuracy and computational efficiency without compromising on system performance.
